Arena - from Latin harena, arena ‘sand, sand-strewn place of combat’.

It took this female a moment to realise she'd been thrown into the pit to compete. Not naturally competitive, her first instinct was to scurry away and curl up in a hole to die where no-one could find her. When she opened her eyes to see two vultures circling around her undead body, already drawing energy out of her organs with their greedy excitement, her self-preservation instinct kicked in and she rose up to fight. She didn't do it very efficiently or valiantly - I can't even say she went home in one piece - but she survived to learn from it that her will to live was stronger than her will to die.
