AUTUMN CASTING - I have put some autumn photos at the top to give the general idea of what this is about.  

I am mainly shooting at outdoor locations these days, or indoors with natural light. I am no longer doing studio work. Most of my work with models comes under outdoor portraiture and clothed glamour, with a 'real life' feel. Some might call it 'fashion', but to me that means selling clothes, which I am not. Looking for models with a natural look rather than elaborate hair, makeup and costumes. I am based in Braintree, but use locations  in North Essex mostly including Colchester, Chelmsford, Great Dunmow, Thaxted and Saffron Walden.

 

I am a semi-retired professional photographer with over 40 years experience based in Braintree, Essex published widely here and abroad. I was assisting my late father, the well-known Essex photographer Dennis Mansell, from an early age.

I started freelancing for local papers when I was still at school. When I was 18 I had two exhibitions of my black and white work, at Braintree Town Hall Centre and St Marys Arts Centre, Colchester, and I won a camera in a Practical Photography competition. For some years I worked in commercial, industrial and public relations photography with my father. clients included BP, Midland Bank, Pontin's, Crittall Windows, CEGO, Warmlife, Ernest Doe and Strutt and Parker. We travelled all over the country shooting the holiday brochures for Pontins, and all around the Mediterranean for Pontinental. We also shot scenic and human interest stock photos for picture agencies. My work was used by Athena for postcards, and I have been published in Amateur Photographer, Practical Photography, Photography Year Book, Essex Countryside, This England, and numerous magazines in the USA. I was a staff photographer at Essex County Newspapers for 11 years where apart from the news photography I was responsible for finding models locally for the fashion and advertising features. I photographed Her Majesty The Queen opening the new terminal at Stansted Airport on the Royal Rota for the Essex local papers. For 10 years or so I ran a rather unique studio in a former health club in Cressing Road, Braintree shooting portfolios for models and dancers as well as freelance press and PR work. I also had numerous websites related to Essex landscapes and modelling. Sadly the landlord decided to sell the building and I lost the  studio , so rather than look for another I decided to work from home.

I now work mainly on location using Nikon digital cameras.
