Light painting involves capturing the movement of light using your camera to create (or "paint") shapes, patterns, colours, and other fantastic effects in your photographs.
To give you a brief idea of what is required for light painting, here are some of the essentials you will need to use:
- A dark space (e.g. outside at night, in a studio, in your garage, etc.)
- A camera
- A tripod or surface to stabilise your camera on to avoid unwanted motion blur in your images (from camera shake)
- A light source (e.g. light painting brushes, flashlights, lasers, glow sticks, strobe lights, candles, LED lights, etc., but it depends on the type of light source you use)
If you are interested in trying your hand at light painting, this guide by MasterClass includes camera settings, the equipment you'll need, and the types of light sources you can use, and this guide by Canon contains some beautiful images and examples of light painting you can try yourself in their quick video.
Also, travel photographer Susan Magnano outlines the basics needed for light painting (and shares some stunning examples) in her video tutorial below:
We hope you enjoy the stunning collection of light painting images below created by the PurplePort community!
