Textures are anything you can feel on your skin when it touches a surface. In photography, texture is the visual depiction of this feeling in a two-dimensional image.
Successfully capturing this feeling in your photos will add more depth to your work. You can even make the texture of a surface the subject of your image, such as the roughness of sandpaper, the silkiness of hair, or the smoothness of water.
Whilst you can use photography techniques (i.e. the right zoom, lens, aperture, lighting, etc.) to capture texture, post-production techniques (editing the contrast, using monochrome, etc.) can be used to enhance it.
MasterClass provides some excellent tips for capturing texture in photography, and Shutterstock gives some fabulous examples of photographers who have captured texture in their images.
We hope you enjoy this photo collection, which shows how creatives on PurplePort have fabulously captured different types of textures in their work.
