Jason Skarratt Photography is a full-time photographer based in Staffordshire, United Kingdom, with over 31 years of experience.

After recently sharing their photoshoot (featuring model ThatWitch) with the PurplePort community, Jason Skarratt Photography generously gave us their time for a quick interview to go into more detail about the shoot.

Check out the fabulous images created during the photoshoot, and find out what inspired them for the shoot, how they planned it, the camera gear and settings they used to create these beautiful (and sometimes ghostly) images and more.

How did you come up with the concept? Did anything inspire you?

The concept has been on the back burner for years as I used to experiment with double exposures back in the film camera days.

Recently, Zoe and I wanted to do an art nude shoot, but with a bit of a twist, as we have shot lots of nude shoots together in the past. It was nice just to try something a little different and see if it would work or not.

That's the advantage of having a model who's up for trying weird ideas.

As I now shoot mirrorless, it was a good time to take advantage of the In-Camera Multiple exposure settings, and it also made a great video for my YouTube channel.

What did you do to plan the shoot?

To be honest, there wasn't much planning involved. We had the day booked, and we had the original idea.

We wanted to do some different style nudes, and the multiple exposure idea just dropped into my head the day before the shoot.

Zoe is great for when I suddenly change direction on a shoot concept, literally on the spot, haha. That's why I worked with them quite a lot over the years. They never get phased by any idea I throw at them.

How did you arrange the shoot?

If I suddenly get a cancellation or an unexpected free day, I usually drop a casting call out on my Facebook or Instagram.

I'm in a really lucky situation that after shooting models for years, I now have quite a good group of reliable models who will always come back and shoot with me and my mad ideas. Like having a group of muses in a way and vice versa; if any of them have an idea or theme they wanna try, I'm always open to doing their shoots, too.

On this occasion, Zoe was free that date, so I instantly got them booked in. 9 times out of 10, there is always someone who is free to shoot.

What was it like shooting at that location?

I do most of my shoots at my apartment, which sort of doubles up as a studio. It's a great space for a variety of different styles, and after shooting here for years, I know exactly which areas work well for what shoots.

I have quite big windows and a lot of white walls giving me great natural light coming in for most of the day (depending on weather conditions, haha). It's like having a giant soft box everywhere you shoot.

Also, there's the advantage of having tea and coffee on tap and good heating for these winter months.

Tell us about the gear you used.

The whole shoot was shot using natural window light.

I shot it with my Nikon Z6ii set on Multiple Exposure (Additive), 2 image overlay and a vintage Nikkor 50mm 1.4 Lens on a z mount adapter.

I absolutely love the vintage lens. It gives a great feel to the images with a real nice vignette and a lovely shallow depth of field, which adds a bit more of a ghostly feel to the final shots.

I made a YouTube video of the shoot (which you can see on my channel below), showing how I set up the camera. I recorded the EVF so you can see how it looks in real time as I shot each image.

What's your favourite image from the shoot?

Ahhh, now that's a hard one. Working with Zoe, you get lots of great portfolio-worthy images from a single shoot, but if you twisted my arm, I'd have to pick this shot (see image below).

I love the expression of Zoe's face and eye contact in the close-up layer and then the contrast ghostly feel of the full body shot in the background, giving her face a good area of shadow to lie in.

For this shoot, I prefer the ones where one shot is close up and the second image is a full body shot. I will be experimenting more with this theme in the future but adding maybe 3 to 4 images overlayed instead of just the two.
