Whether you want to create your first Halloween-style images or are just looking for some new ideas, knowing where to start and what you should use can be challenging.
Below are some of the most straightforward and easy-to-implement techniques you can use right now to achieve those spine-chilling results you desire!
Use props in your images
A prop can enhance your image and give that Halloween feeling. It could be worn or used by a model or even be the subject of your image!
Below are some examples of props you could use:
- Pumpkins
- Witches hat
- Cauldron
- Rocking chair
- Books
- Vintage toys
- Dolls
- Clowns
- Masks
- Skulls
- Candles
Choose a spooky location
The right location can provide the perfect place for creating your eerie image.
While abandoned buildings may be an obvious choice, they are not the easiest or safest locations.
You could find more accessible locations in your local area.
Have a look for places nearby, such as a pedestrian underpass, a subway, or a run-down back street.
You may find the perfect location is that dilapidated old shed at the bottom of your garden!
Use make-up
A relatively normal and beautiful image can be transformed into something frightening using fake blood, face paint or special effects make-up!
You can find lots of fantastic Halloween make-up ideas here.
Take photos through translucent material
Add mystery (or absolute terror!) to your image by shooting a model through material that allows light to pass through but won't fully reveal what's behind it. Use a bright light source behind your subject for extra effect.
Similarly, you could use a model's silhouette by shooting them through a window with a bright light source behind them.
Even the simplest of poses will look terrifying!
Use photography techniques to change your image
If you can't find a spooky location and you're short on make-up or props, try using photography techniques to give a terrifying twist to your images,
You can use double exposure to convey an eerie feel or motion blur to add ghostly figures.
Have fun and experiment with your photoshoots!
Whilst these tips are a great place to start for creating your spooky photoshoots, there are lots of other things you can do to achieve terrifying images.
As with all things creative, experimenting with different techniques and trying new things is a great way to learn and grow. You might just discover something extraordinary.
Remember to have fun with your creativity and enjoy the process!
