"Frustrated by King Ptolemy’s determination to prevent her making contact with Ceasar, Cleopatra selects a carpet for delivery to Caesar. Apollodorus hires a small boat, with a single boatmen, for the purpose.

The porters leave the palace bearing a rolled carpet. They complain about its weight, but do not know that Cleopatra is hidden in it.

As Cleopatra's boat arrives, it begins to sink, barely allowing time for Apollodorus to drag the carpet and its queenly contents ashore before hoisting it onto his shoulder and bearing it past the unsuspecting guards into the palace.

Caesar unrolls the carpet and discovers bedraggled Cleopatra . . ."
