Tardigrades are microscopic, yet almost invincible one-celled organisms. They can survive in space. One way in which tardigrades adapt to various environments is cryptobiosis ('hidden life'), a deep state of suspended animation that closely resembles death. This is called "Tönnchenform", but it is commonly known as a "tun". Its metabolism slows to 0.01% of the normal rate. It can stay in this state for decades, only reanimating when it comes into contact with water.
