Portfolio Review (Gulp)

It is a while since I asked for a Portfolio Review (which was 'interesting'!), but my photography has moved on (or is at least different), I keep fiddling with which images are on my port, and continually tweaking my notes, so thought I ought to get some feedback. While comments and advice from my fellow photographers are always welcome, I am particularly interested in the views of Models, Stylists, MUAs, and Designers - who after all are the target audience for my portfolio.

Happy for comments (positive or negative) and constructive suggestions on notes and images, but in particular:

  • Is there anything in my port that would put you off from working with me - either on a paid or TFP basis. Any important information missing that you would need in assessing whether I was suitable for a casting if I replied.
  • Are the number of images excessive (put you off, don't care, don't look beyond the first few anyway), or not ( illustrates the range and diversity of work) - and if excessive which sort of ones would you loose (Although in any cull I would want to maintain and/or improve the diversity of my portfolio)
  • Is there anything I can do to improve my port (including taking better images!) that would make you more likely to work with me in the future.

Thank you in advance - be gentle (wish!)

Jon

As a model there is nothing that would put me off. Your images are lovely and you have a good amount of decent references.

I like it. Great set of images and I like the layout and the headers idea for each section - I may "borrow" that once I have enough info to put on my own :)

As a photographer... I see a lot of range in your photo's, lot's of diversity wich is a good thing if you want to reach a broad audiance. I do find some of your images a lot stronger than some of the lesser ones. But that's probably subjective. Also they vary in the quality of editing I feel. (understandable as I often find this very difficult myself) This could possibly slightly diminish the overall perception of your port. Just my 2 cents.

Thank you for this. I would really be interested in hearing which ones your think are weaker, particularly from an editing perspective (not a full image by image critique, just some examples), in email/message if appropriate. The thing is, I did my first edit when I started last June (every shot in my portfolio has been taken in the last 15months) , and have significantly improved since (including completely changing the way I edit skin), in the last few months - so I could definitely go back and re-edit the weakest ones.

Thanks Rich - I only added the headers earlier the afternoon!

Imo your page is good, absolutely nothing that turn me off. As I'm sure you would expect, the images , again in my opinion, vary from extremely good to not sure what you were trying to achieve. But I find that variety very positive. For what it's worth, I would say keep moving forward, keep reassessing your own work and comparing with the work of others, but don't loose confidence and that desire to rethink your own efforts.. for what it's worth I have many days when I am tempted to bin all my images, so if you have time to have a look at my page, I would be grateful for any comments. I need all the help I can get!

Would really appreciate you pointing out one or two that you think are weak, or not sure what I'm on about (in DM/Message if necessary). I clearly can't say if I will agree, but would like to relook at those critically and see if I can either improve, or just dump.

I really love your black and white images - I've loved them for a long time - they have great feeling and sensitivity. I didn't really look at the colour images because to be honest I have zero interest in colour at the moment - but that's just me :)

Ps - You've worked with some of the same models as me - it's always interesting to see another photographer's interpretation of the same model/ person :)

From my quick look, I think all the images you have taken of the same models are better than mine. Especially Chala. Need to up my game!

I think you're being very modest - you have some amazing images in your portfolio - I'm jealous and wish I'd taken them :)

JonC  Chala Figue was kind of special - there's a uniqueness about her - I only shot with her twice before she ran away to Berlin or wherever she ended up. I have quite a range of lovely images from those two shoots. I remember her climbing a tree in Mayfair and we were then chased through the street by a security guard. I also remember eating fish and chips with her on Brighton beach. She was going to travel down to my area for a third shoot but her car broke down, or failed its mot or something, and the shoot never happened. Anyway, that's enough reminiscing by me :)
