Nikon 85mm z mount

I'm looking into getting a 85mm lens, we have the Nikon Z 85mm F 1.8 , Or we have the slightly cheaper Viltrox 85mm Z mount F 1.8

Has anyone been using either of these at all , Any pros and cons to consider??

Thanks for your time , Ian

I am at the same place as you although I am looking to get the 1.2 one. The 1.8 as I used was a lovely lens but lacked the 3d pop of a 1.2, although still great separation and micro contrast . The Nikkor 85 mm1.8 is a very nice lens and has lovely bokeh balls and sharpness. The copy I tested had great mid-range to infinity sharpness. Did not test it at closest focusing points.

My friend has the Viltrox and he is happy but the contrast is quite different, colours a re a bit different and fringing was a bit more prominent wide open. The operation was smooth as much as I can remember.

I love my Nikon Z 85/1.8. Of course I’d love f/1.2 but it comes with a large price tag and a large size. The 1.8 is great, inexpensive and comparatively small.

There is another one to consider now, I think -- the Yongnuo YN85mm f/1.8Z DF DSM:

This lens is, by all accounts, astonishingly sharp for the money.

I've been trying to decide whether to jump back to Nikon Z mirrorless from Sony FE, but I think this lens is in my future regardless. It appears to be _very_ impressive.

You could try hiring the Nikon lenses for a few days to get a first-hand impression.

And then you might buy a f/1.8 (of any brand) for everyday use, and hire the f/1.2 for special occasions.

Just another option :)

£2,200 for the Nikon 1.2😳 (pensioner) even if I wasn’t it’s still 😳. Wex seem to be doing a special on the Nikon 1.8 at the moment for about £690, less than ‘grey’ prices I’ve seen.

That page says I'll need an AA battery for the lens.  Erm, really?

Meantime, Cotswold Cameras are doing it for £509. https://www.cotswoldcameras.co.uk/Nikon-Z-85mm-f1-8-S-Lens-1

Fwiw the AF-S f1.8g works perfectly well with the FTZ adapter and is much, much cheaper.

Simon Carter , That is one way of doing it but does it make the camera feel unbalanced?

IanClive it’s absolutely fine on my Z8.

I also use a 105 f1.4 with an adapter. That’s a big lens but it’s still perfectly usable.

FWIW I almost never find that lens adapters make cameras feel unbalanced, because you can support the combination at the adapter. It's generally no worse than it would be on a DSLR, because the adapter's weight is going to be about the same weight as the DSLR's extra bit of body and the mirror assembly and it's in more or less exactly the same place.

I use the 85/1.8, lovelly lens replaced my f mount 85/1.4 sigma. As I am an amateur it does what I need very well, recommended
