How did you come up with the concept? Did anything inspire you?
I wanted to explore the area of Chichester Harbour, an area I used to take school groups for field trips a long way back.

What did you do to plan the shoot?
I love shooting on location, perhaps more than studio. There is more of a freedom.
I don’t plan too much, just enough to know the locations and the potential.

How did you arrange the shoot?
I arranged everything through PurplePort.
Zsani is a fabulous model and also a person with a heart of gold and a personality full of laughter. Perfect for how I shoot on location. This was our 4th shoot and our second all-day location day.
It is so important to really know who I am working with, and the range of conversations we have together seems unending, from Music to Psychology. This is so important during a shoot.

What was it like shooting at that location?
It was a very difficult day for photography with such bright sunshine and a spanking new Fuji X-E4. It was made even more difficult as I was still searching for a little Clip-on flash to use fill in.
Our first stop was Chidham and the Sea Levee and a lovely wheat field. Very few people were around, so we had no real disruptions. I don’t tend to direct much as models find their own comfortable ways to stand, sit, etc. The ferocious heat drove us to the cover of a pub for lunch.
The second stop was Bosham, full of tourists, but we managed to wander and be patient. Bosham is steeped in history, being the place where King Canute commanded the waves to go back without success.

Bosham regularly floods, and houses in the narrow streets have raised doorways and barriers for the very high tides. The Romans also came ashore here. It was a case of finding sheltered places to avoid areas of the skin burning out.
Our final destination was West Wittering Beach. Zsani was amazed at the beach being so vast. Plenty of scope from the coloured beach huts to the dunes and a tide out so far due to the full moon the night before. Walking barefoot was the order of the day, and I was both coat hanger and photographer.
This is a location where composition of images was the key. A super creative day. We travelled home very tired but with a feeling of achievement.

Tell us about the gear you used.
I tend not to get complicated with gear. I like the small mirrorless XE series from Fuji. For 6 years, it was the X-E2S then I moved with the times to the X-E4.
Hunting down a new X-E 4 took quite a while earlier this year as they were flying off the shelves faster than they were imported. Lenses are XF18-55mmF2.8-4 R LM OIS and occasionally XC50-230mmF4.5-6.7 OIS.
Travelling light makes things less complicated, and I love the colours the Fuji sensors give.
What's your favourite image from the shoot?
This is my favourite (see image below), as I love the light spots on the face from the holes in the hat.
