D H Photography is a photographer with more than 39 years of experience who is based in Stoke on Trent, United Kingdom.

Following their recent photoshoot (see more here) at Basford Hurst Cottage studio with model Rose Magdalene Child, D H Photography generously gave their time for a quick interview to share their shoot with us.

Check out the interview below and find out what preparation was needed for the shoot, the camera gear they used and more (and, of course, images from their photoshoot!).

How did you come up with the concept? Did anything inspire you?

Ever since Leanne advertised Basford Hurst Cottage (BHC) 'opening soon', it was a location I really wanted to shoot at.

It offers a multitude of different locations within the various rooms, outbuildings and gardens, and unlike a 'studio shoot' where the same sort of image can be replicated anywhere, BHC was a unique offering.

I saw that Rose Magdalene Child was guesting there, a superb model who was also one of the first models I photographed nearly 10 years ago (then known as Tillie Feather), so I thought it would be a great opportunity to shoot with her again at this fabulous location.

What did you do to plan the shoot?

I only had a 2-hour session with Rose, so I had a choice to make.

Do I aim for 3/4 images and really take my time with perfect lighting setups, etc.?

Or do I aim for as much variety as possible within the 2 hours and work with less complex and more portable lighting?

With nearly 40 years of experience as a wedding photographer, I am used to working under pressure to get the best shots possible in a short space of time, so choose the latter option and put us both under pressure!

How did you arrange the shoot?

Having seen BHC hosting Rose on PurplePort, I simply applied.

Rose and I chatted on PurplePort over any particular theme, but knowing how versatile Rose was, I simply suggested we 'wing it' on the day - and we did just that!

As with any successful shoot, it is all about teamwork and working together to try and create something great.

What was it like shooting at that location?

Basford Hurst Cottage exceeded my expectations - firstly, what a warm and lovely reception from the owner, Leanne (Miss_C) and her fiancé Simon.

Each and every room offers something different, and I could have spent an entire week exploring the endless opportunities the house, outbuildings and gardens had to offer.

You can see from all of the many references what a fabulous venue it is, and I would highly recommend a visit if you possibly can. Whether you want to be creative with lighting (many are available to use at BHC) or keep it simple with the natural light provided through the large windows, there is something for everyone.

Tell us about the gear you used.

I used my beloved Nikon Z9 with Z 24-70 2.8, 14-24 2.8 (bathroom shots) and am one of the lucky people who have actually managed to get their hands on the latest 85mm 1.2, which I have fallen in love with.

My favourite images from the shoot were taken on this lens, wide open. I just love the way the focus just falls away, leaving the eyes and face pin sharp (more obvious to see full res on a big screen).

Additional lighting, where used, was kept simple with one or two Godox AD200s to provide some light (the spiral staircase in particular - lighting inspired by the superb photographer Owen Lloyd on PurplePort)

What's your favourite image from the shoot?

Easy to answer! The image below (both Rose and myself have chosen this as our avatars).

85mm 1.2 wide open for that shallow depth of field I spoke about above, but with the intensity of expression and that pin-sharp eye which just grabs your attention. Lighting was just simply available light through the large window.
