Rules for Adding Keyword Tags to your Images

By Laura SJ FD, written 1653560972

Adding relevant tags means your images are searchable using the Image Search feature. It's a simple but great way to get yourself more exposure.

If you want to know more about image tags, including how to add keywords and member tags to your images, see The PurplePort Guide to Image Tags.

Below is a list of rules to follow when tagging keywords in your images.

Keyword tags can be multiple words

To make your tag more relevant to your image, you want to use multiple words in one tag (with spaces between each word).

For example, you can add blue dress or blue spotted dress.

Only letters and numbers can be used in keyword tags

This means no characters or symbols. If you add these to keyword tags, they will be automatically removed, and your keyword tag might not make sense.

For example, you cannot use any of the following:

  • Punctuation marks (e.g. ' " / - ? ! . , ( ) [ ] )
  • Special characters (e.g. # $ % £ @ = +)

Spell your keyword tags correctly

If you create a keyword tag that is spelt incorrectly, your tag will be useless because no one else will find your images using that tag.

Whilst our team of volunteers may be able to correct a misspelt keyword tag, there's a real risk that your tag will just be deleted if it's misspelt. Make sure you only add keyword tags that are spelt correctly.

Other inappropriate content for keyword tags

The following will be removed if you add them as keyword tags:

  • Names
  • Web addresses/URLs
  • HTML
  • Racist or defamatory language
  • Slang
