The PurplePort Guide to Image Tags

By Laura SJ FD, written 1650888742

Adding correct and relevant tags to your images means your images are searchable using the Image Search feature, a simple but great way to get yourself more exposure.

PurplePort staff members use the Image Search feature (especially the Keyword search) to find fabulous images to promote in posts on The Purple Blog. So, if you'd like the chance for your image to appear on our blog, make sure you add great keyword tags to your images.

If you want to know how to search for images using tags, see our guide for How to Search for Images using Tags.

What are image tags?

There are two types of tags you can add to your PurplePort images:

  • Keyword tags to describe your image or key aspects of your image
  • Member tags to credit other PurplePort members involved in your image

You can add existing keyword tags to your images or create your own. All keyword tags must adhere to our Rules for Adding Keyword Tags to your Images.

You can add multiple tags (keywords or members) to your images. Make sure you use keyword tags that make sense, are relevant to your image, and that other people are likely to search for.

How to add tags to your images

To tag a PurplePort member in your image, enter their nickname or display name into the Member tags box and select their name from the drop-down. Nicknames on PurplePort use only letters and numbers, whereas display names can contain letters, numbers, and various special characters and symbols.

To tag a keyword in your image, start typing your tag into the Keyword tags box and select the tag you want to use from the drop-down. If your tag does not appear in the list, continue typing the keyword you want to use and then press enter to create the tag. This will tag your image and add that tag to the database.

There are several places on PurplePort you can add keyword and member tags to your images.

FAQs

How do I credit someone another PurplePort member in my image?

Type their nickname/display name into the Member tag section of your image, and select their name from the drop-down.

I've tagged a PurplePort member in my image, but my image isn't shown in their Credited Photos. Why is this?

Some members prefer to review image tags so they can choose to approve or decline these tags before they are 'live'. Whilst you can tag them in your image (and their tag will appear for you), it won't be displayed to anyone else until the member tagged has approved your tag request. Once tags have been approved, those images will appear on their Credited photos page (and other members will see the tag too). The Review image tags before showing them is an option that can be enabled/disabled on the General Site Settings page.

How do I credit a non-member?

You can add their name/credit in the Description section of your image.

And encourage them to join! If you refer them to PurplePort and they join, you'll earn a free referral gift ($5 or 30 days PurplePort VIP)! And you'll be able to tag them in your image.

Why do keyword tags I've added sometimes disappear?

Image tags are managed for consistency. Tags get amended or deleted if they don't make sense, are misspelt or inappropriate, or have no images attached.

Who manages image tags?

We have a team of PurplePort members who volunteer their time to manage image tags. They are part of the PurplePort Community Team (PPCT).

Can I join the PurplePort Tag Team?

Yes! We'd love to have you onboard! Create a support ticket via our Help & Support page if you want to join.
