Neo-noir is a modern or contemporary rendition of film noir. Whilst the film noir genre includes stylish crime dramas often with a twisted dark wit. Neo-noir has a similar style but with updated themes, content, style, visual elements or media
I am an experienced published photographer who has done a significant number of shoots.
The experience of the shoot is something I really enjoy and to me it is important that the model feels comfortable and is treated with the utmost respect.
I work within genres including but not limited to
- Retro style film noir themes
- Modern Neo-noir
- Crime scenes and;
- Gothic horror.
You could call it edgy boudoir I like to emphasise beauty, character, sexuality and the erotic but by NOT doing adult themes or anything explicit. I will only shoot topless if it works with the narrative of the shoot.
I love doing retro type stuff borne out of an interest in Film Noir. This is inspired by such modern neo-noir films as LA Confidential for example I love the dark themes that this genre brings in terms of mood and style. The theme is often a retro set up with a contemporary twist. I try and encourage to encourage my models to exploit the elegance, sophistication and glamour of the period but often in a contemporary context.
The models are encouraged to be both the good girl and the bad girl. A femme fatale! The "bad girl" has a lot more fun but always gets her just deserts :).
It enables the model to role play and to have some fun....that's the point isn't it?
I will always ask the model for their input so that when we start the shoot we are on the same page. I welcome your ideas, that way we can develop a storyboard which sets the tone for the shoot. Good communication is important to me I always reply to emails
I have been commissioned to shoot fetish themes specifically by couples and models wanting something "different" I have also shot Gothic horror scenes in studio, on location and at home. What would your ideas be? Don't be afraid to approach me with ideas.
Expressive photography is not about recording [events, truth, reality]. It is about exposing [feelings, beauty, surprises, good, bad] and exploring [possibilities, complexities, subtleties]. That is the realm in which I find motivation and inspiration. I hope you do too?
The most important thing in a Model-Photographer relationship is trust...and just to stress this point because it needs to be up front:-
- I DON’T do adult
- I DON'T do explicit
- I ALWAYS welcome chaperones
- I will NEVER ask a model to do something you are not comfortable with.
- ALWAYS read my references
For me, it's not so much about capturing moments in time, or the act of photography, as it’s about freeing scenes from both our imaginations.
