Female Gladiators existed and like their male compatriots were not slaves but free Roman Citizens that chose this lifestyle. They were armed and fought in exactly the same way. Armour favouring the combat side and bare-chested.One Emporer went as far as banning the practice, suggesting it may not have been uncommon.
