Yesterday at the studio with the amazing Ryan Carr we told a story
Charles Herbert Lightoller.
He was born on 30th March 1874 and at 13 years of age made his first voyage overseas.
His second voyage aboard the Holt Hill ran into a storm and he was shipwrecked on an uninhabited island with the crew for 8 days.
In January 1900 Lightoller joined The White Star Line. He traveled many places with the company until he became the Second officer on board Titanic.
On 14th April 1912 after helping hundreds of passengers to the lifeboats as the ship sunk Lightoller jumped into the sea.
He was pulled out and found himself on lifeboat 12.
He spent the night searching for survivors and when the Carpathia a close by ship came to the rescue Lightoller was the last person to board.
In 1914 at the outbreak of the Great War Lightoller became a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy and on 19th July 1918 his ship rammed and sunk a German Uboat.
On 1st June 1940 and now 66 years old Lightoller and his eldest son sailed to Dunkirk to help rescue some 400,000 British troops stranded on the beach. His sailing ship The Sundowner successfully brought back 130 soldiers and also helped rescue over 100 more when a warship was attacked by German bombers.
Lightoller was de mobbed in 1946 at the age of 72
