On this day I put out a casting for 5 male models/actors. I did not tell anyone what we were doing only to bring a gardening tool and wear a white tee shirt joggers and boots.
I gave them a location and a time to arrive.
When they had all arrived a led them to a clearing in the woods
From behind a tree our brutal shotgun armed prison guards appeared who ordered them to dress in their prison outfits then they chained them all up.
We proceeded to to carry out tasks around the landscape. Long before this shoot I spent a lot of time researching the chain gangs, how they came to be and why it all started. Interestingly it started at the end of slavery. Landowner needed a workforce to work their crops and fields, local officials needed workers to build railways and roads.
Many of these land owners would pay prison bosses for work forces. In the southern states of America chain gangs became a regular site along road sides from 1908 right through to the late 1930’s
