The curragh is a small fishing vessel, still in wide use. It is thought that St. Brendan, an Irish monk, in the 6th century may have reached America in a slightly larger version.

The curragh is a small rowing boat with a crew of 4 - 6 men. Originally it was a light frame, covered with leather. Later it was covered with linen, tarred to make it water tight. Many curraghs to-day have a fibreglass skin.

This photo was taken at Inisheer, the smallest of the Aran Islands off the Galway coast.

For "Father Ted" lovers: the shipwreck that appears in the opening shots was on Inisheer, maybe it still is if there is anything left.
