Hit me.

I used to have about 160 images up of which over 130 were FPIs. Now I am down to 15 images which I hope gives a more concise overview of what I do.

Part of me feels that I want to ditch everything I have done to date and start out in a new direction, whilst still retaining whatever it is that identifies the images as mine.

So what is my strength and what is my weakness. What should I be doing next. Be as critical as you like, I am not looking for an ego massage.

I love your work, particularly your portraits. I just want to see more :-)

I'm an admirer of your images, however the great unwashed have changed their idea of what is 'in'.

Perhaps a different method of processing to satisfy their taste, if their appreciation is to be courted.

Err sorry for being one a nosey moo, and two a bit dim, but who are the great unwashed

I think your pictures have a great unity - lighting, composition, subject matter and post-processing all blending together seamlessly to produce a very captivating image. Frankly I can't find anything I would ever want to criticise because the images work so well!

The future? Well I'm tempted to say that when it aint broke don't try to fix it .... but personally I would like to see you do something a bit David LaChapelle. I suspect you could carry that off rather well.

I think you misunderstand. I am not looking for FPIs. I've been there and done it. I am hoping to progress in some way. I could go on endlessly producing similar work, but that is almost like passport photo work. No matter where you are on the greasy pole, there must be an upwards movement.

My reply above applies here in part. Not so much a question of fixing something but doing something better.

Ken... my tuppence worth... this is the impossible question because there's nothing to say why  you want to create images here. What is it you are trying to achieve? What inspires you these days?  I have always admired your work; you were my biggest mentor when I was starting.

I love that you want to move to something new... So why these retain these 15 images? Some are spectacular, some leave me a little cold. All are interesting in some way. But the interest varies in each shot. Some have that KenP painterly effect I was never able to emulate. Some showcase how inventive and sardonic your perception of the world is. Others demonstrate how good you are at directing and coaxing an emotion or expression out of a model.

Chiaroscuro is my favorite by far. Although I would like it even more if there was a bit more sex in it. But that's my shallow taste :) But given the mystery of your motivation, let me ask for what i'd love to view: the application of your use of colour and edit approach to a Norman Parkinson infused style with a hint of Guy Bourdin sensuality.

Weakness? let the easy targets (both verbal and photographic) be. You are better than that.

You could set off on a path to work toward Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society, which would be quite a challenge, as this standard ain't easy. I don't speak from experience as I'm nowhere near the standard.....but it would give you photography new focus ( forgive the pun)

http://www.rps.org/distinctions/about-distinctions

This is would give you artistic freedom, but would allow you to progress towards an internationally recognised  standard of photographic merit / attainment.

Thanks for the detailed response Andy. I'm pleased you like Chiaroscuro, because it doesn't fit the main stream of photo sites (although it was selected by 1x.com today) I am equally pleased that some leave you cold. At least it proves that there isn't some underlying formula. I did briefly dally with some Guy Bourdin lighting and sexuality, but at the end of the day it lacked a subtlety that I strive for.. Maybe I'll do a bit of research on Parkinson's work.

I am not one for formal courses or attainment ladders. I am quite selfish when it comes to these things and what matters most is that I like the result, not a group of elders that may hold different views and tastes. For the same reason, despite invitations, I don't submit to international events. My output isn't aimed at a specific market or audience, so it would be pointless to tailor it to any photographic society, but thanks for your suggestions.
