I thought it was Harry Potter that was working it out with help from Hermonie Granger...............................oh sorry that's the House Elves Conspiracy Theory (H.E.C.T) the follow on from S.P.E.W. :-D

Hey - If that's correct - All I need to do is delete all my shots - add them all on at once and wait 3 months for whole host of fpi's :D 
Somehow .... I don't really think that would be the case.
Coincidence has a lot to answer for. :D  
Just enjoy them when they arrive and most of all enjoy your photography.

Lol - No I'm afraid its all to do with String theories and Quantum mechanics - When published it's likely us mere mortals will still not understand but I'm sure Brian Cox will be on the case with a four part BBC series that will help.

Ok - here is an honest summary which can be gladly mocked too but anyway...

You need to break your question into two. One is the selection of images by the elves. That is not automated. Real live members really go and look for great images and do so commendably on a regular basis. Some eleves could be replying to this post, you never know. They are amongst us... ;)

The second part is what Orson said - they get so busy finding great images a queue of them build up over time where the algorithm comes into play which is basically an overstatement of the word at best. Simple code might be better. It is probably a series of if/then statements which says of all the images in the queue, put them in a logical order based on certain criteria (if someone wins FPI, next image they can win has to be greater than X number of hours, etc). A couple months ago it was noted this code was posting images to the front page in a somewhat predictable manner. Someone noticed this and basically the same response was given then with the same jokes.

That is why I said the question has to be broken into two. The choice of which image is selected to be an FPI is done by a committee of members on the site and is not automated. The sequence of putting these images onto the front page from the 4,000 backlog is automated...

Any conspiracy theory could not be based on the later process. It will only post what is in the queue. The committee chooses the images though and this is not a Big Blue/IBM tool (yet). ;)

I could be completely off by this. If so then oh well. I stopped looking at FPIs when this topic came up earlier.... My life is much more Zen as a result. You should try it! :)

Anyway, I have my tinfoil hat on, so I can save from this conspiracy theory. :-)
