B&W making a comeback

Nice to see a good proportion of recent FPIs are recognising the value of a monochrome image.

I've had 50% more FPIs for mono shots this year than in my previous 10 years on PP combined.  I've no idea if the elves' tastes have swung towards mono or if it's just the random ups and downs of these things. (Since I do a lot of mono I'm hoping for the former). Front page looks quite strong today, with a healthy mono contingent, but that swings back and forth.

I love creating mono images although I don't post many on pp. Maybe I should.

Can't go wrong when they're over exposed /clipped and wb is out....mono the saviour. ;)

I don’t shoot anything else so didn’t realise it was out of fashion 😊

Love it. Always my preference.

Probably 70/30 mono/colour.

I mainly photograph in black and white. Personal preference... Everyone will have their own opinion about that, nothing wrong with that. But whether this is a fad or not, I don't know. It has always had a place for me.

If you look at it that way, you're doing it wrong. For a good monochrome image you have to start from a good recording. A bad photo will always be a bad photo, no matter what sauce you pour on it.

Who would have guessed, I improve them with editing glitter, the magic stuff. ;)

Unpopular opinion: for me monochrome used in a modern context: It is there to say “the image is such a powerful image, colours would just distract”, not as a fashion statement.

I'm a lover of black & white images, not the easiest format to get noticed enough for the fpi's.

JPea said, 1704053935

Photorunner I'm not sure about that.

Well over 50% of my FPIs are monochrome.

b+w will never be out of fashion, as it is the basis, the foundation of all photography as it engages the imagination to it's
utmost when connecting with the photographic medium

please Marc, keep producing your mono work !

i have happily been outed as a mono lover for years now :)

You obviously produce mono's that have thumbnails that stand out.

As I say, it's harder for mono's to make the fpi's, as their thumbnails can make them appear quite dark and stand out less.

Ideally fpi's need a thumbnail which looks like a great picture in itself and stands out from the rest.

Sorry, I personally think it's a travesty.

I agree with indemnity in fact, I'd go further and say these days there is no such thing as a good black and white image (and notice I don't use the term monochrome).

It seems wrong on so many levels.

And as for the various developments going on in photography, what of them?

The FPI share of such images has always been out of proportion in favour of B/W images.

I genuinely can't understand the fascination (except in an historic value) for B/W images.

Far from improving the creative process, it squashes it into oblivion.

Obviously, we all have our own personal likes and dislikes so I would be interested in why there is no such thing as a good black and white image these days?

I am making no claims for myself on this. Just curious.
