Do we need the Rant Zone?

I often consider reopening The Rant Zone.

I'm glad you don't.  The site is better off without it.

Of course, by Betteridge's Law, the answer to my subject line is no.

But here's a couple of observations:

  • We already have General Politics.  We don't need two.
  • You've said a couple of times that you've considered closing the groups altogether.
I'd suggest that encouraging participation in Special Interest Groups, such as those on a particular theme (underwater, drone, boudoir, video, etc), would reap the benefits of making the site more constructive, and a better, more welcoming place.
  • I manage a number of image groups, and have thoughts about how they could develop, though at the (probably considerable) cost of extra site development.  Would it be worth it?  Possibly, but unlikely.
  • What I'd prefer to see would be better, more constructive participation.
The "Yes and..." thinking of improv acting, for those in that world.
Could the group moderator tools and guidance be tweaked to encourage that?
And might it have the outcome of a healthier site?

Everything you say should have its place, and a rant zone.

This thread ranting about the possible reintroduction of the rant zone should be the first thread in the rant zone. Ironic really.

I have no intention of bringing it back; it was pure toxicity.

I don't ever seriously consider closing the groups.

Until 2019, we promoted 21 member-created groups to the membership via notifications. I'm not sure why we stopped.

I can't say whether something is worth it without knowing what the "it" is.

I didn't remember that we had had one, so ranted on the photographer's group and was shut down. I like (and need) a good rant sometimes so will return to internalising my anger.

I'd say yes to it being reopened ... have it as an option on the report button, but system managed so x reports = Post automatically moved to the Rant Zone, with the original hidden and a rant zone message.

Sort of like the ideas knocked about in the discussion about off-topic posts.

Have moved posts create new threads - sure, they'll be out of context... but that won't matter as its a *rant*.

People need to vent... the forums give them the opportunity to vent amongst like minded people, just not a safe corner to do it in.

No.

The concern with the reintroduction of a 'Rant Zone' is that it attracts a lot of negativity purely by it's nature, and the previous one was one of the busiest threads at times, spreading toxicity.

There are times when members wish to show their frustration but here's probably not the place as it takes moderating, time and causes useless bickering. There's no real need for a Politics group imho there's enough of that nonsense everywhere else these days.

You yourself commented at the end of that post "I shouldn't have vented I've made myself more angry".  So it apparently didn't even help you :)

Yes the rant zone should be reintroduced and everyone who subscribes to the group should immediately be banned from the site.

Quick way to dispose of the negative nellies. 😂

Maybe there should be a 'Ted Lasso" group - dedicated to relentless positivity.

It would be interesting to see how difficult we found it to contribute (as opposed to expressing negativity).

Not sure a rant zone is needed in a place where people love to needle and egg on animosity.

Think people have frustrations and it would be great if they could be addressed. But these forums thrive on passive aggressiveness and airs of superiority.

Then you'd the situation where a heated thread would get met with a one with saying:

"I don't get what that rant was about. It doesn't happen to me. So does it happen at all?"

Not sure if it would progress anything.

No, and I imagine this will be locked very soon.

I remember the rant zone and it was just an excuse for people to be nasty in disguise of "having a rant". It seems counter productive for a site that's meant to be about creatives networking and that's probs why it was removed in the first place.

i Jest of course, No i dont think its needed but its up to those in charge.

I'd have been horrified if you'd said otherwise! :')

Maybe resurrect that?  Not often enough that anyone would be irritated by it, or there'll be rants about it! ;)

To those in any doubt, this post was started slightly tongue-in-cheek, knowing full well what the answer would be, but it did give an opportunity to voice some constructive ideas .

I shall be asking Admin to lock this post ASAP :)
