It's brilliant. I am thoroughly enjoying it. I can remember watching the Richard Chamberlain version in the 1980's but this is much better. Tempted to download the book onto my Kindle once I have finished the latest MurderBot story.

Can anyone recommend the book?

Great re-working of the series and a fab book to read too.

I would recommend the book...

BigBaldTone Thanks.

The book is windy, it has too much "Thee, Thou etc" conversation in Latin between Anjin and Maria.  Chamerlains romantic ideals seemed soppy to me.

Yes the book is well worth reading.

RoninUK Of course you would say that.

Yes book was an excellent adventure. Takes you into a world where you can lose several hours without realizing.

I have watched the Disney Plus series. It looks pretty interesting.

There is a Netflix series called Age of Samurai which covers the rise of Nobunaga and the unification of Japan under his successor Hideyoshi. After Hideyoshi's death five regents were created to rule until his son could take over. However, Togugawa Layasu, who was one of Nobunaga's allies eventually took over. The Shogun story seems to be based on Layasu's takeover and his becoming the first of the Togugawa Shogunate in 1603 which ruled until the Meiji restoration in 1868.

After seeing snippets of the new series on YouTube I looked into buying a copy of the book. I handed over 99p for the Kindle version.

Book is good.  I recommend the whole series of books as noted above.  Old style adventure……no more no less.

I enjoyed the (of its time) Richard Chamberlain series particularly because there was no translation of the Japanese speech…..so you were in the same position as the hero and learned with him.  (My Japanese is limited to discussing navigation because of that..😉🤫)

I refuse to kow-tow to Disney so don’t have the new series.  Does it provide translations?  Shame if it does.

I can also recommend Samurai William the non-fiction book which covers the life of the navigator on which Clavell based his Shogun character.

I loved the original series with Richard Chamberlain as ’Anjin-san’ Blackthorne. Sounds like I need to subscribe to Disney fx for this version…

I can also recommend the Netflix series.  But your autocorrect seems to have got in the way…..it’s Tokugawa Ieyasu…..not Layasu.
