When new information changes your perception

Just seen a news report which I found hard to believe. Apparently in half of the US states there is no minimum age for marriage. A woman was on the report stating her mother forced her to marry her rapist when she was just 11 years old.

That's half the US states with no minimum age for marriage. The child marriages are invariably between a female child and a much older male.

How is that anything but institutionalised child rape?

How the hell can the USA bang on about the bad treatment of women in Muslim countries when it allows its own female children to be married to older men?

I feel like I just dreamed that.  Totally unreal. BBC news report, unless I was tuned into some spoof channel.

many things in America seem unusual, strange and downright insane to those of us in the civilised world.  America... The one place in the world that makes Northern Ireland seem forward thinking...

Do you have a link to your "news report"?

No, I was just watching BBC news and it came on.  I feel a bit dazed by it - just so unexpected. I suppose there is an outside possibility it was a report brought in by someone with a hostile agenda, but this is the BBC.

Don't take Wikipedia as the source, check through to the reliable sources that the article cites:

See, I don't hold to that view of America - I am very much pro USA, and I don't have much time for the USA bashing that sometimes seems to be a reflex reaction.

What I said was done with a degree of tongue in cheek, but having visited it for work over the years, from what I experienced, its not a bashing, its a simple fact.  For what should be such a progressive and bright nation, the conduct and attitude of many there are almost third world when it comes to the rest of us.  And thats not even getting into what its like in the southern states, truly frightening.

Strange, nothing showing on the BBC news feed?

When did that happen then? From what source did your shocking info come from?

Hang on:NEWSFLASH: Trump to marry a three yr old.  Bush rumored to be Bridesmaid. Tony Blair and Chardonnay are proud to announce the'll be attending.

Whisper; I actually own the Eiffel Tower -DON'T TELL ANYONE ELSE - OK? The thing is I have so many other business interests I simply can't give it the love it deserves. You seem a caring person. I can offer it to you for £10.000! Simply send me the money to my account in Nigeria and dear friend I can sleep soundly knowing that the iconic symbol of France is in safe hands.

Oh, quite forgot: Yeo! Jeremy Corbin!

Well, I have never visited, only interacted with Americans visiting us and the occasional web contact, and in general I have a very favourable view of the country and its people. That's why this was unsettling.

I mean, sometimes the reports coming out of this country reveals a truly alarming incidence of paedophile abuse, but at least it]s illegal here. Even the Catholic church has been forced to condemn it in its own ranks.

You can listen to the podcast here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08xxd8l.  It was broadcast on 16 July.

'More than 200,000 children were married in the US over the past 15 years, new figures from the campaigning charity Unchained at Last have revealed. Sunday hears from the founder Fraidy Reiss about who the victims of child marriage in the United States are and the legal loopholes that allow it to happen.'

(I like to listen to the 'Sunday' programme, to hear what the religious nutters are up to.)

And here is the charity's own website: http://www.unchainedatlast.org/laws-to-end-child-marriage/

Well, I haven't made it up, Dave, if that is what you are implying. The only other alternative is that I have lost my mind.

Thank you for that. I was beginning to think I really was in a dream and had just made it up.
