LEDs versus the whole rainbow

The Ghost

By The Ghost, 1734692672

I'm somewhat surprised that no-one has done this before, because there's a few of us just here on PP who have been warning about LEDs for years:

Not the most exciting video but how the camera records some of the secondary and tertiary colours from the RGBWW light is shocking.

*posted in general chat as models & mua's will be looking at getting their own continuous lights*

I've been following Gaffer and Gear's channel for years - he's an excellent lighting tech and whilst some of the videos do get a little too deep into the technicals they're very informative.

I think the other thing to consider is that even two identical lamps from the same manufacturer are not always outputting the same light - I have two upper-priced Godox RGB heads and in white mode there's a visible difference of the G/M at 6000k between the two heads, so you'd need to do two white balance readings and adjust the tint accordingly.  You do get what you pay for at the end of the day.

Saracen House Studio , I agree on the too technical aspect! My interest wanes when he runs TM30s every few hundred kelvin, I tend to care most about 5600K and everything else is nice to have.

Though I keep trying to justify a Spectromaster just to see how my lights perform.

The Ghost I’m interested to know what colour- or lighting-critical stuff you shoot. ‘Cos there doesn’t seem to be much in your port and you clearly know a lot about the subject.

I think I’ve mentioned before that if someone wants to earn a living from photography they should get good at photographing things that aren’t fun to photograph. That’s where the lighting critical skills come into play (product work, especially used products), everything here is just mucking around with cameras. Nobody in their right mind wants to wade through 100 photos of slightly differently discoloured bits of plastic, let alone meticulously photograph them.

Funnily enough, I’m going to start putting up a sort of “video portfolio” on Vimeo, because now that anyone can select video as a shoot style, convincing collaborators that you can actually do something is quite hard on a site where you can’t upload video.

I’ll ping you a link when there’s something actually there.
