The dark side of modelling

Modelling really shouldn’t be any different from any other profession

Edited by Chris Green

I think that's true in one respect: in any profession, you're going to run into the occasional moron and these threads make it clear that modelling is no exception.

On the other hand, there aren't a lot of professions where you're going to be in such a vulnerable position when you meet those morons. When I've met morons in the workplace, I haven't usually been alone with them, physically smaller than them or committed to being micromanaged to the level of what I'm wearing, if anything at all, and what standing, sitting or contorted position I'm supposed to be working in.

When I'm shooting with a model, I try to be very aware that the nature of the job means my position is inherently intimidating unless I actively defuse it, and I presume it's in the back of every model's mind that the next photographer they meet might turn out to be one of those morons. Not saying I'm always good at doing that as I'm not the most socially adept person, but I do my best. If I'm understanding Lo la's point - and I hope she'll tell me if I'm not - it's that there's a minority of photographers who either don't do that or actively abuse the opportunities for control that are inherent to model photography.

I think these threads are valuable because they remind all of us to be aware of the model's perspective, which can be easy to forget when we're focused on building a shot.

I'm not sure what to suggest about the morons who intentionally abuse the situation beyond the reporting mechanisms discussed. Morons are notoriously resistant to being told not to act like morons.

They'll sell a camera to anybody, they become instant photographers. The majority on here are not photographers, they are joiners, plumbers, teachers, civil servants, doctors, police, solicitors, shop assistants, farmers builders etc...there are sad sacks everywhere.

They'll even sell Medium Format Digital to anyone....

;)

Only fools. :)

Just for balance - is this foolish “sellers” or “foolish” buyers? And is this your personal opinion or some form of qualified background opinion or fact.

The reason I ask is that your comment is a bit of a ‘trigger’ point for me, as I have recently purchased a digital medium format camera. I bought it because I was interested to see how it compares to full frame. And how digital medium format v 35mm compares to film medium format v 35mm. There is a lot of information to read on the web, which I have done. And interest piqued, I decided to find out for myself with hands on ‘lived’ experience.

I didn’t need this camera. I just bought it because I could, (now I am semi - retired and still work to afford luxury purchases like this).

And so far, I can say from personal experience that using a digital medium format camera, and in particular, outside the studio, has been very positive, pleasurable and an interesting experience.

If that makes me a fool, then so be it………

In hindsight, masochists rather than fools would have been less contentious and still expressed the same sentiment.

I sometimes try to be a little overprofessional at times, I'm more neutral than complimentary, but occasionally ill look through the viewfinder and think 'this portrait is looking amazing" and I'll just say so. After that the shoot goes so, so much better and the model is more confident and relaxed. I don't know why you'd ever want to go to the opposite end of the scale and knock the model's confidence.

As I shoot a lot of film etc I need to reject a lot of things before pressing the shutter, so the models needs a little confidence and Im always working on my social skills in the most tactful ways to skip every 20 poses and capture the 10% of the ones I feel work. The working dynamic of myself and the model is as important as exposure, darkroom skills etc.

Foolish buyer. After 14 yrs exclusively using this and tethered I'd like to think I have a rough idea how it works, that has not been an easy character building experience. They are as cheap as chips today but back then £14k for basic 1 lens kit and you couldn't come on here and ask...'how do you do this with xyz camera/back/software' as nobody had a clue.

Today I use a Sony FF mirrorless as main camera and as yet not parted with the MF gear.
