Using a film camera

I plan to shoot some film in an upcoming studio shoot, mainly to test the camera and 120 backs are still light tight.

I keep looking at getting some 120 and 35mm film and then see the price, And think.............. I don't think so.

Last year I cleared out my fridge of old film that I was scared of using it to find out the film was use-less and I had wasted loads of cash.

Old film will be fine, I recently did a retro styled studio shoot on 1985 HP5 using an Olympus OM1n/50f1.4, images were grainy (as HP5 always was) but well worth doing

I wasn't prepared to take the risk.

My first camera.  Thought I was David Bailey although only had the 1.8 50mm.

I prefer digital.  I tried scanning some old slides a few tears ago.  I noticed 2 things.  1, wow how dusty is my storage and 2 how unsharp are the images when subjected to today's pixel peeping.

I gave up after losing five minutes of my life.  Doesn't he know why some of the shutter speed markings on a Hasselblad V lens are in a different colour to the rest?

F6 are much rarer than F5 (due to huge difference in production I understand) and therefore more expensive. I got a F5 for £250 2 years ago.

The F6 is still in production, it's the only film camera that Nikon manufactures now.

According to someones analysis of serial numbers it seems they are selling around 270 per year. I think that won't do much for availability on ebay at good prices.

No, even secondhand F6s are only fractionally cheaper than new and once you have one, you cling on to it for dear life.  There’s no way I’ll get rid of mine, especially as it was an insurance replacement for a brand new F80 when I had a bag full of kit stolen from me after a model shoot in Kensington, including the shot films.  It has been in production for a good 15 years or more, not sure how long the F5 was in production for.

You know how I was saying I didn't need to shoot film ever again...

My new old 5"x4" camera arrives next week.
40 years since I used one.

That is pretty, Huw -- is it the exact one you bought?

Some of mine are coming back out to be subjects again soon, and I might drag the Rolleicord and Moskva-5 out to the woods too.

The former is very easy to use and fun to potter around with; the latter is an epic pain in the arse that has occasionally produced really interesting, spooky photos.

The F6 is (as of this week) officially discontinued. :-(

That's the exact one - photo from Ebay.
Crown Graphic.
£200 for the camera - now to sort a used lens...

Should be hand-holdable.
Going to be a bit different shooting maybe six shots total, instead of 600 or so...

Yeah. What will you be processing with -- have you looked at the Stearman Press tank and the Mod-54 thing?

The Stearman Press tank seems to have had the kinks ironed out of it now. Looks very interesting. But the Mod-54 is homegrown and probably cheaper. Speedgraphic have both I believe!

I am slightly interested in the Ars-Imago reboot of the Rondinax-type machines for 120. I actively hate loading 120 onto reels.

I've bought the Stearman tank.

Ahh cool! Definitely interested to see what you get from it. All of my bellows rig experimentation has given me the sense that I should perhaps be DIY-ing a 5x4 next year...

My heart says I should buy 5 rolls of Ektachrome in 120, my head reminds me that I use Ektar for things that won't work as well with digital and that Provia is cheaper and has better dynamic range if I want E6.

I blame this thread entirely for having just bought four different rolls of film :-D

Kodak Ektachrome, Lomography Redscale, Purple and Metropolis...

Probably a good excuse to do the Ektar vs Velvia vs IQ180 shootout I've been threatening to do for a year, inspired by On Landscape's Big Camera Comparison articles.

Tim Parkin (the editor) also runs a drum scanning service for those who want the ultimate scans from their film.;-)

R’hllor I picked up a few rolls of out of date Redscale film, just shot the one so far and it could be interesting to use.
