CerithMJ is a photographer based in South Yorkshire, United Kingdom, who has shared many of his shoots with the PurplePort community. He's been interviewed for PurplePort before, appearing in our SHARE A SHOOT series in 2023, which featured his beautiful hotel shoot with model SamJaz

After sharing another shoot (this time with model Meg Modelling at Zavod Studio UK), CerithMJ generously gave us his time for a quick interview to share how these fabulous images were created, the inspirations behind the shoot, how it was planned, the camera gear he used, and much more.

How did you come up with the concept? Did anything inspire you?

I don't really shoot with concepts in mind. I've not got much space at home for storing props, outfits, backgrounds, etc., so I tend to gravitate towards ideas that are relatively easy to create at the studio without needing to own a load of extra stuff.

Though, I have started making notes on my mood boards about the feel I want from the idea, so maybe it'll eventually evolve into a more concept-oriented way of shooting.

For now, though, I just find ideas that interest me and then put my own spin on them.

Any ideas I plan for a shoot don't tend to be linked by a common theme either, so we might shoot some portraits, some fashion, and then something else entirely.

I looked at my usual places for inspiration when planning the shoot. PurplePort, Instagram, and Pinterest. I'd been following Meg for ages, so her body of work was also a big source of inspiration.

What did you do to plan the shoot?

Even when I'm not planning a shoot, I will frequently add to my shoot ideas and inspiring shots collections on here, Instagram, and Pinterest, so I've got plenty to refer to when I do need to plan something.

I then trawl through these collections, looking for something that jumps out as being of particular interest, and fashion a mood board.

I usually end up with far more ideas than could reasonably be done in the duration of the shoot, so I will spend some time refining and adding some notes about lighting, outfits, etc., before sharing them.

The shoot with Meg was no different, other than needing more ideas (as it was a longer-than-usual shoot to accommodate Meg's travelling time), which allowed me to try some more 'out there' ideas, such as the cellophane dress and an art nude set, so it was well worth it.

How did you arrange the shoot?

I replied to one of Meg's Instagram stories. She responded, which led to a conversation about working together.

After a few more messages we had sorted a date/time and were booked in at the studio.

Then I just had to wait about 4 months for the day of the shoot to finally arrive.

What was it like shooting at that location?

I'm always shooting at Zavod Studio UK. It's practically a second home now. I attended the very first studio day in the first iteration of the studio back in October 2021 and have been back nearly every month since.

The current studio is in its third version and has grown so much in such a short space of time. There are loads of backgrounds, props, lighting, and some great natural light, too.

Overall, it's an excellent space to shoot in, and Xeniamodel, who owns the studio, is always helpful and welcoming.

Tell us about the gear you used.

I used my trusty Canon RP with either an EF 50mm 1.8 or an EF 85mm 1.8 lens. That's pretty much the setup I use for most shoots.

All lighting belongs to the studio so I've got no idea about the makes and models of them. Possibly Godox.

What's your favourite image from the shoot?

There were many great shots from the shoot, but I'm particularly pleased with how this one came out.
