After recently sharing their photoshoot (featuring model Rafe) with the PurplePort community, Gem from Devon Photography Training generously gave us her time for a quick interview to go into more detail about the shoot.

How did you come up with the concept? Did anything inspire you?

The concept of the shoot was medieval because the model, Rafe, had a lot of larping costumes that he could bring along to our shoot.

Rafe is a stuntman and actor and has worked in films (such as the new Napoleon film).

What did you do to plan the shoot?

The shoot itself was a group shoot I hosted with Rafe at my studio. We sent some shots back and forth of the outfits he had.

I have worked with Rafe a few times, and he has always been an excellent addition to our shoot. He will pose and express on cue, often without direction, and is a breeze to work with whilst I teach my students what they need to know.

We did not use a mood board to plan this shoot because we knew what to expect from shooting together, as we've worked together before.

How did you arrange the shoot?

As we have worked together before, I messaged Rafe on Facebook to discuss the shoot.

Then, I invited photographers to come to the group shoot and learn how to take photos in the studio with their particular cameras and also how to use lighting and modifiers, learn about lighting patterns on faces, and so on.

What was it like shooting at that location?

The shoot took place at my old studio space in Honiton, East Devon, where I am based.

I now use my home studio for 1-2-1 lessons, shoots for up to 5 people, or lessons with one student and one model at a time, as it's a small space.

Tell us about the gear you used.

My shots were taken on my Nikon D810 with Sigma Art 24-70mm F2.8.

What's your favourite image from the shoot?

My favourite image from the shoot is the image below, as I like the reflection of the sword, the pose, and the streak of light in the background.
