Hi. We photograph hats. Hats are our passion. Beautiful couture pieces created by award winning milliners from all over the world. We work with milliners in the UK, US, Europe and Asia, photographing beautiful pieces on beautiful women.
For our clients we photograph their collections so they sell.
Our work is about elegance, sophistication and sass. It has taken us over 5 years to build up our client base in international millinery.
We currently are on display at Museu de Chapelaria (Hat Museum) in Portugal. In 2020 we were official photographer for London Hat Week.
Our work has also been published in ‘Life is Art’ April 2021.
Samples of our work can be found here.
About The Portrait Kitchen
My name is Jon and I run The Portrait Kitchen with my wife Anjee. We pride ourselves on creating great work in a safe, secure environment. Models are always treat with the utmost respect and dignity. Our work is about elevating and empowering women. A millinery model has to emote mystery, enigma and sophistication. Age is not relevant to us, attitude is.
When we work with milliners we insist that our models are paid a fee as they play a vital part in making a headpiece look amazing. Models are part of our creative process so their contribution should be rewarded. Models also receive images from their shoot to add to their portfolio (accrediting us, the milliner, retoucher, MUA etc).
We occasionally do TFP when someone has an idea or concept that stands out, or for a cause that has a social statement. TFP is also considered when a model/designer’s work catches our eye or what we can provide can help them develop their work. Perhaps you have an idea you want to develop or you want us to design a portfolio refresh for you? Talk to us because we love conceptualising and collaborating.
All of our shoots have a call sheet that explain what we and the client want to achieve, colour/fashion requirements, accessory ideas etc. This is so all collaborators in our shoots have clear guidelines in advance. Bear in mind that for a millinery shoot we would typically be shooting upper body and head. It is not unusual for our models to be all glammed up from the chest and above but wearing jogging pants and trainers below. Due to other commitments we only do two shoots per month. We believe less is more and we are not a transactional studio.
IMPORTANT - All models under 18 must be accompanied by a chaperone. This is non-negotiable. Both Anjee and I are CRB checked. If you are new to modelling and we see potential in your look, we will guide and support you. Want to bring your Mum? No problem, we will even take a shot of the two of you together if you want. Want to bring your Dad? No problem, he can access our Netflix, wifi or even, as has happened in the past, do work on his laptop in our lounge whilst we photograph you. We have even had one model bring her dog!
We have access to a number of MUA's that we trust.
Our space has numerous Colorama backdrops and we can work with up to 4 lights, an array of modifiers, gels etc. We can also provide post-production and retouching. We provide a seamless and secure workflow for models to review their shoot as it happens.
We are very much client driven, placing a lot of emphasis on what our clients are looking to achieve and how they want it delivered. Simply put, our clients trust us. We are also fun, laid back and good at making a model feel at ease. We want you to leave feeling excited and having had fun.
We are easy going, level headed and non-judgemental so if you have an idea you would like to develop please let us know.
Our studio is in our large kitchen (hence the name). We also have large external spaces that we use to ensure safe distancing. This is our home and we think it offers a more relaxed space than a formal studio. We always provide lunch and refreshments at our shoots.
Please get in touch if you'd like to know more.
