The concept of creating Utopian landscapes has always come form my own personal desire to not only escape my current city of residence but to escape the everyday trappings of having to interact with large groups of people. I am an extremely confident artist but when I am taken out of my comfort zone, my social skills that I require to be part of the crowd diminish. I find utopia in real life locations that offer a visual reference of Dystopia, as I find that the more people are put off by a location due to the feel or look, the more I feel comfortable with it.
I added this personal element to my photography and art practice in my final two years of University, I wanted to create Utopian landscapes from Dystopia and vice versa. I want to capture elements of the past and present and present them in an abundance of color and juxtapose landscapes.
In parallel with my Utopian landscapes practice, I draw abstract representations of individuals from encounters within my daily routine. These encounters are usually on a one to one basis, so that I can interact with them at ease. I include elements that stand out about the individual's stance/personality or external elements that surround the current context of the encounter with them. I present the form of an individuals abstraction figure in the realm of fantasy and Romanticism. Once the images are complete, I do return to the individuals in question and inform them that I have captured their presence in the world as I visualize them.
