Marzanna is a Baltic and Slavic goddess associated with seasonal rites based on the idea of death and rebirth of nature. She is associated with death, winter and nightmares. In a traditional rite people would create an effigy of a woman in clothing to represent Marzanna and then set the effigy on fire and drown it. The ritual represents the end of the dark days of winter and the coming of spring, and victory over death.
