The people of Pompeii didn't know that Mount Vesuvius was a volcano and in fact there wasn't even a word for volcano in Latin (the language spoken by Romans) as they were not aware of their existence until Vesuvius erupted.
It surprised me to see just how many towns and villages were build in the shadow of this amazing volcano.
In August 79AD Vesuvius erupted for the first time in documented history, Pompeii and many other towns were completely destroyed.
Pompeii was lost under tons of ash and was hidden for almost 1500 years.
