My work has always been about contrast and people. Whether I portray the skeleton of an elephant walking across a green African landscape or a boy with his arms outstretched in front of the Women’s Monument. To me art is a way of expressing how I see the world, a reflection of and an escape from, reality.
Personal friend and mentor Sandra Hanekom has had a great influence on my creative process, teaching me to think about what I am saying. My sources of inspiration are as contrasting as the way I see the world. I find great inspiration in the works of Artemisia Gentileschi, Andy Warhol, Robert Mapplethorpe, Jan Saudek and Diane Victor. Much like Saudek, I often interact with my images, adding layers and colours to give specific effects. The greatest inspiration though is my muse and my wife, Monique
Art should be more than craft and more than pure expression, it should be the lovechild of both.
