Michael Roberts

My PhD involved meticulous research into the history of facial imaging and looked into a great deal of contemporary analysis of the portrait genre. This included studying a number of significant post-war British figurative artists who have produced works that challenge traditional representations of the human body and question the conventions of portraiture.

 

The research conducted for this project was very thorough, I analysed primary and secondary sources to ascertain the methods and ideas present in an artist’s work. I also looked into the reception of significant artworks and how they have been written about in contemporary art history texts.  In my Viva Voce, the external examiners commented on the depth and the broad reach of my research.
