My photographic version of the famous van Gogh painting "Portrait of the Postman Joseph Roulin, April 1888". Van Gogh has made several portraits of Joseph Roulin, this is the F439 version.

How did I create this photo?

I could not find clothing that exactly matched the clothing that was needed. I bought clothing that resembled it a little bit and then adjusted it by hand and in Photoshop to make it perfect.

I found the hat in a British Ebay store under the name "Vintage style 1960s Fiddler Breton cap", removed some parts and crochet "POSTES" on to it. In Photoshop I changed the very dark blue to a lighter blue color.

Also the coat was found in a British Ebay store. I found it under the title "Vintage Military Style Wool Double Breasted Overcoat". In Photoshop I had to adjust the collar a little bit and removed the buttons from the shoulder part and I changed it from black to blue.

The background with the flowers was impossible to find online. I did not mind it to be a little bit different, as long as it has the same feel but after hours of searching I decided to let someone paint it.

The model's beard is real. In Photoshop I made it a bit bigger and a little bit curly.

In Photoshop I added some brush strokes to the background, hat and coat.

The whole proces of researching, finding and adjusting the clothing, preparing the model, testing light set-ups and camera settings, shooting and post-processing in Photoshop, took me about three months.
