Back in 1987, as a teenager, I had an opportunity to attend the Indy 500 race as a guest of a team that was competing in the race. My father knew the owner of the main sponsor of the team. I have always loved cars, even as a little child my mom said I would have Hotwheels in the bed instead of stuffed animals. So when the chance to attend the Greatest Spectacle in Motor Racing I was excited beyond belief. That whole weekend I decided to take a one of my old hand me down 35 MM film camera to the event to take pictures around the garage, the team, the driver, pit lane, etc. Not knowing until a week after the event when I had the film developed, I stumbled upon one thing Photography will do. Photography can capture that one moment, in that 1/1500thof a second of time, the emotion, the excitement, the movement, the once in a life time shot. Ever since that day at the Indy 500, I knew I had stumbled upon something. My love of automobiles/Motor-racing and the hobby of photography, I discovered the challenge of capturing those exciting fleeting moments only found in racing.
Over the next 20 years of my life, I kept this hunt or challenge of getting that perfect shot strictly as a hobby. Over those years, using my contacts through my Information Technology career, I attended many racing events as an invited guest and eventually a paid photographer for a racing team. In the motorsports, I have attended Formula one races in Indianapolis, and Japan, NHRA in Las Vegas, MotoGP at Laguna Seca, and Indianapolis, Indy Car at Long Beach, Las Vegas, Mid-Ohio, and of course the Indianapolis 500. And countless other amateur racing events.
In the last 5 years though, I have changed my subject matter to a more personal level of glamour photography. Through an acquaintance of mine who was a fashion model, she said you can do amazing things with a camera with race cars and drivers. She thought I could do an amazing job taking pictures of people as well. I thought about it and said well when it comes to racing I have to be at the right place, at the right time, I’m at the mercy of the Sun/lighting, and one thing is I can’t ask the driver to do go back a few feet and do that again. But with model photography, I can control the setting, the lighting, and I can control the subject. But the end result is still capturing that moment in time but this time at 1/160thof a second. I’m still capturing that same emotion, but now it’s the sensuality, the atmosphere, the dimension or the depth of the scene, and instead of victory at the finish line, it’s the self confidence of the subject.
With glamour photography now my main concentration of work, I turned my side photography business and turned it into a full time career. I’m still using my 20+ years of my professional IT career but I’m integrating that experience into media content creation and management. I actually trade marked a service called Media Presence as a Service (M.P.A.A.S.). It’s a monthly subscription for your (social) media creation and management. We are now managing our clients media creation, social media management, web services, and their online market place with M.P.A.A.S.
