MY Lady Garden Work in Progress

Roses especially yellow symbolise new beginning, friendship, gladness and joy.

D's story

I was diagnosed with diabetes type one at the age of five, I don’t recall this affecting me until about the age of eight when I learnt to inject insulin myself. This was a new beginning, bringing about a real change for my family and me as I was now in control and gained a level of independence however, I also remember hating this task. As a teenager I wasn’t aware of the full risks diabetes, I just wanted to be like all my friends who were able to drink and go out not having to consider diabetes

When I became pregnant with my first child it was another whole new learning curve as no one informed me about the added risks during pregnancy. Both babies were admitted to the Neonatal unit after birth due to their reduced sugar levels as they had been feeding from my body. Neither of my children have acquired diabetes for this I am grateful.

Within the yellow roses I have included chocolate-coated roses representing my love of all things sweet yet having to curb myself from over indulgence. I prefer to see myself as an advocate and role model for any young woman with diabetes and not the victim of life’s circumstances.
