Joel Hicks Photographic is a private photographic studio and 13 acre location set in the heart of the Midlands (LE10 3AH).

Instagram: @JoelHicksPhotographic

It is owned and managed by model, actor and creative entrepreneur Joel Hicks.

The Photography Club at Joel Hicks Photographic meets at least once a month for 2 hours, with different models working to different genres and levels each time. It is a fun and friendly learning environment, with tuition provided (if and when needed).

Any interested photographers should contact Joel directly, as places are limited each session.

Members enjoy exclusive discounts and benefits.

The hire charge is £20ph.

Hire includes the studio and other buildings, as well as the location (there is no division of hire).

A name, contact number and the photographers home address is required when making a booking.

This fee grants a licence for one photographer to shoot one model.

A different hire rate applies if:

  • Two or more photographers wish to hire Joel Hicks Photographic
  • The site is booked for group shoots/workshops
  • Commercial work

It should be noted that during the summer months, Joel Hicks Photographic operates a 'multi-booking policy' which means that on any given day, more than one photographer/model may utilise the facilities here. This is permissible due to the size and scope of the grounds.

Outside the summer months, JHP will only host one booking at a time.

The large studio space at Joel Hicks Photographic has everything you need for your creative needs, and has recently undergone a £10k refurbishment.

It comes equipped with 3 x Pixapro STORM400 high speed flash heads, which are included in the hire price.  In addition, the studio boasts various fixings, remotes, triggers, reflectors, stands, props and many other photographic aids, such as a human turntable, smoke machine, wind machine and laser light system.

The studio also has a CITI600 TTL Battery Powered flash lights for HSS and for outdoor use.

Plug sockets are located both in the ceiling and on the walls, and creatives are welcome to bring their own lighting equipment should they so wish.

The vinyl backdrops provided are white, black and chroma-key green (for composite and green-screen production).  The vinyl is extremely durable and strong, and the backdrops are easily interchanged using a light and easy to use mechanism.

In addition, the studio boasts interchangeable wall murals, perfect for three-quarter length shooting.

The studio includes a 42" plasma screen TV for the viewing of images or other media, Apple TV, soundbar, free WiFi access, free tea & coffee facilities, as well as fridge and other consumables.

In addition to the studio space, Joel Hicks Photographic also boasts many outbuildings, including a workshop and 30 metre square log cabin.

As this is a working site, the workshop is fully functional. Models and photographers are therefore asked to be respectful of this, and assume all responsibility for their health and safety when shooting.

The log cabin features a king size wooden four-poster bed boudoir set.

Joel Hicks Photographic is situated within 13 acres of privately owned land, and provides a wonderfully varied and creative opportunity for both photographers and models alike, as well as commercial clients.

The location encompases a number of diverse and distinct features, rendering it suitable for a wide range of creative projects. These features include a 3 acre lake, industrial units and machinery, a stable area, several ponds and much, much more.

Please note: please bring suitable footwear (ideally wellies), clothing and a towel (if intending to go into the lake).

It should be noted that the studio and outbuildings are fitted with an extensive system of CCTV cameras, as is the surrounding location.

These cameras are in operation for the protection of both the model and photographer, and to ensure studio and grounds security.

The CCTV footage is only checked if an issue is raised by either party involved in a booking, or if there is damage/suspected theft on site.

If you have an issue with this, please visit a studio which doesn't have CCTV.

Non-studio day cancellations made more than 48 hours before a agreed date will not be charged if an alternative date is booked in at time of cancellation, otherwise the full cost of studio hire may be requested (dependent on the circumstances).

If a model is booked on a 'model day', 100% of the total fee will be requested if a cancellation occurs, regardless of when the shoot date is. Photographers, please don't book a slot on a model day if you're not able to honour this agreement.

The studio maintains this policy as models travel from far and wide to shoot at Joel Hicks Photographic, and over the last 18 months model day cancellations have resulted in both the studio and models losing money on several occasions. This is not acceptable.

Quite simply... if you aren't prepared to pay the fee should you cancel, then please don't book in the first place.

Joel Hicks Photographic runs a '10+ Unlimited' Scheme. As such, if a photographer books in 10 hours or more in a calendar month at the studio, they can shoot for the remaining days of the month free of charge! Please inbox me for details.

In 2019, any photographer who books in for 1 hour or more, each month, on any given model day will be given FREE & UNLIMITED access to the studio and location at JHP for one whole day in December 2019.

That’s £160 worth of shoot time for free!

For freelance models looking to host model days, or who are embarking on tours to the Midlands region, Joel Hicks Photographic is an ideal place to visit.

Organising Model Days:

After some form of initial contact, models need to send an email to This email should include their rate and level, any online links to their portfolio, and some images (with the photographers permission) which can be used to make an advertising flyer. The email should also include a selection of dates on which the model is free to host (if not already agreed).

Please note that models are asked to supply two sets of dates, around 3 or 4 months apart, as it is standard practice for models who shoot here to always have 2 dates on the calendar. When all this information has been recieved, both shoot dates can be set.

All models must agree to attend if 4 hours or more are sold.

A £20 deposit is required when booking in a model day, payable by the model, which is refunded on attendance.

Both of these conditions have been introduced to reduce model cancellation rates.

Selling Model Days:

Joel Hicks Photographic will advertise every Model Day/Tour through its social media channels and through the official website and newsletter, however success in selling is always primarily the result of both the studio's efforts AND the model doing their own promoting and advertising.

This means that models are expected to:

1- Post regularly on social media;

2 - Advertise on freelance networking websites; and

3 - Make direct contact with photographers in the area who have expressed an interest in working with them (view the WTWW list).

When publicising a Model Day/Tour online, models should always tag Joel Hicks Photographic (please do not tag Joel himself). This way, the studio is notified of any posts and it also helps to increase overall awareness of the studio and its location.

When any booking is made, whether it is taken by Joel Hicks Photographic or the model, the booking party should immediately inform the other party of the time and duration of the booking, and the photographers details.

Please note that unlike other studios, models are able to shoot from first light until late into the night. As such, there are no 'set hours' on a model day.

On The Model Day Itself:

The model is the host of her own Model Day/Tour... and it is the model who is responsible for meeting and greeting each photographer, the shoot itself, and the collection of all monies.

It is very important to note that on any given Model Day/Tour, Joel may or may not be on site due to his other work commitments. If a model is not happy about this, or doesn't feel comfortable with this fact, then please don't arrange to work here.

Joel works full time as an agency model and actor - it is a job that is very different from freelance modelling, and at a moments notice he can be called into London by his agent and he has to go. In addition, Joel also runs the 'Always With A Smile' foundation, which means, as a consequence, he spends a lot of time travelling up and down the country in his charitable endeavours.

In respect of the fact that Joel can't guarantee to be on site, the issue of model safety may be of concern... however, as stated, there is an extensive CCTV system in operation in the studio, outbuildings and around the location (which is there for the safety and security of all parties), and in addition, whilst Joel may not be present during any given Model Day/Tour, there are normally between 2-12 people always present on site in his absence (including his mum and dad).

A models stay at Joel Hicks Photographic is designed to be totally self-sufficient and extremely comfortable.

Accommodation is available at the studio, and their is a fee of £10 per night if required. This does not cover the cost of a models stay, but contributes to it.

Transport to and from train stations can usually be arranged on an individual basis if needed.

Models staying overnight, or those whom may be touring and staying for several days, are responsible for their own food, drink and entertainment during the hours in which they are not shooting, including evenings.

Again, the amenities at Joel Hicks Photographic mean that this is not an issue, with several supermarkets in the area and a massive film library from which to choose at the studio.

On Completion Of A Studio Day

Once a model has finished her Model Day/Tour, it is expected that the studio is left in a presentable state (with all kit and props left as it was on arrival).

All monies will be settled at the end of each day, and after the shoot models are encouraged to tag Joel Hicks Photographic in any images and posts following the shoot.

Joel does offer a limited number of TF shoots at the studio, but such shoots will only be offered to models who are working, or who intend to work, at the studio. This is due to the considerable financial implications that arise by shooting TF.

Photographers are expected to treat both the studio and grounds with care and respect.

Please park in the 'visitors car park' which is situated on the right as you pull in - do not park in front of the main buildings.

Photographers are allowed access to the studio and preparation area (when a model is not changing), but they should not to enter through the door specifically signed as 'PRIVATE' without expressed permission. It's asked that photographers remember that this door leads directly into Joel’s home...

The lighting at Joel Hicks Photographic is relatively simple to use, however photographers who haven't shot here are encouraged to book in for a 1:1 studio tutorial in order to get the best from their time in the studio (see below). Joel cannot guarantee to be onsite, however if he is, he will gladly help to set up the lights at the beginning of a shoot.

Around the grounds, Joel Hicks Photographic operates a 'whatever you can see, you can shoot' policy... However, no damage must be done to any property or wildlife on the grounds, and both models and photographers undertake a shoot at their own risk.

This is a working site, and so other people may be walking around when shooting. They are quite used to model photography (and often the workmen and fishermen make good backdrops to images). With that said, it is respectfully asked that photographers just check with any other individuals if they are unsure about shooting (especially if working to glamour or nude levels).

When entering the studio or log cabin, it is asked that photographers either remove their shoes or wear the shoe covers that are provided for them in the changing area.

Photographers must use the toilet facilities located next to the workshop.

Tuition is available on site by Joel at a cost of £50ph. During these sessions Joel acts as both the tutor and model, and the fee includes studio hire.

Joel tailors his tuition to the needs of the photographer, and encourages both new and experienced photographers to book in, as well as those who have never been to the studio... as not only do you get clearly explained tuition, but you also get to shoot with a male model - something which is totally different to photographing the female form.

In terms of model photography work, Joel works on a commission basis with an even split of men and women.

Joel Hicks Photographic is little over an hour away from central London by train, with a direct train service running throughout the day from Euston to Rugby (travel time 50 minutes), from which the studio & location is just a short 10 mile drive (a pick up service is available with prior arrangement).

Alternatively, Joel Hicks Photographic is close to Hinckley, Nuneaton and Leicester train stations, or easily accessible via the M1, M6 and M69 motorways.

Joel is a full-time agency model and actor, who has maintained a presence on the freelance scene for nearly a decade due to the studio.

For those interested in working with a professional male, when booking Joel for portfolio work at Joel Hicks Photographic you will receive a reduced rate of £50ph (which includes studio and location hire).

Please see his model profile: Joel Hicks

Most of Joel's duo work is NOT taken by a third party photographer... it is taken by Joel himself, acting as both the model and photographer at the same time in a process called 'Self-Art'.

This means that when Joel is engaged on a couple's shoot he is supplying the studio, the location, his skills as a model, his skills as a photographer, the technology to be able to shoot this way and, following the shoot, his skills in post-production techniques...

The relative cost of this, and the workload, is considerable... and as such, as with his photography, Joel will only work with models in this capacity, who are working, or who going to work, at the studio.

Note: Self-Art was developed because of the lack of opportunities available to Joel to model within the freelance scene, and because of the prohibitive cost of selling 'duo' studio days.
