I run the non-clinical aspects of a Independent Charity Hospital. On the downside there are a load of sick people around me everyday. On the plus side... nurses ;)

I'm the I.T Manager for a Research Company.  I work from home....a lot, so I can indulge my photography hobby on work time :)

Am I on my own when I see 'What do you do' as what do I do FOR FUN?  I am not defined by what I do for pay. I am defined by my passions and by what I love to do ... I think it's very sad that what so many people DO is what they do for pay .... maybe I just march to the wrong tune?

Not sure the question was 'what defines you'...

No but for me, 'what do you do' doesn't mean 'what do you do for pay' either! As I said I think I march to a different band to everyone else.

I train dogs, I ride horses, I model, I take photos, I sing, I write. None of them bring in much money, but its what I do!

A pretty valid observation loulou, it doesn't specifically ask what you do to earn a crust does it? :)

And ask my wonderful best mate that ... his reply

What about those of us that really enjoy what we do as a job? I consider pretty much everything I do for work as 'fun', so the two become quite merged.

is this just to be difficult? In the OP, Russ clearly writes what he means... Why the need to have pin-point specifications of what he means? If someone asks me "What do you do?" I say I'm a photographer and a designer. Because it's what I do. All the time. Sometimes I get paid and have fun. Sometimes I just do it for fun.

Loulou said, 1332181471

No of course it's not to just be difficult, Majk. It was just an observation ... and I have clearly said that I think I must march to a different beat than most others, so am admitting it's probably me who is wrong / out of time with everyone else!! It's not really that big a deal is it?

Sure, many people love what they are paid to do (but I would say that many more wouldn't 'do' what they do for a living if those 6 numbers came up?)! I have done jobs that I really enjoy.

But still, what I actually DO is ... ride horses, train dogs ... blah blah blah ..... I actually enjoyed working in a call centre a few years back. I really did like the job! But I still would never say that that is what I was about, and what I actually 'did'. For me, the paid work enables me to do what I actually do!

I'm pretty certain that Russ isn't going to be offended by what I say ... after all it's an observation as to what other people see 'What do you do' as meaning, and in no way a criticism of Russ's post!

I do wonder about myself sometimes though ... I seem to offend people on here ... totally unintentionally I may add ... I ask questions that maybe only I can understand the reasoning for. Maybe my head is wired up wrong! I just see something I want to ask and so I ask it. I never mean any harm to anyone and am not just trying to be difficult in any way. But I'll carry on doing it - because that's just me and I can't really help it :)

Nice one DanKep ... I am very happy being out of tune / out of step with normality. Who wants to be normal anyway?

This just about sums me up I suppose .... but it does seem to (unintentionally) get me into trouble!

"I wanna be the minority

I don't need your authority

Down with the moral majority

Cos I wanna be the minority"

Wise words .... who wants to be in the flock?
