WTB: Working laptop with Firewire 400 port

Strange request but I want to experiment with shooting tethered to a P25+ back. Anyone has an old firewire 400 laptop collecting dust that they want to sell?

I think you might mean 1394?

I suppose that would be the proper IEEE name. I think firewire was a Mac term. I've been using Macs since the late 90s so I don't know any different anymore. so yes, IEEE 1394

You might want to investigate what the support for the Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter cables is for the software and back in question, because it will significantly broaden the available laptops to a bunch of older Macs:

Are you talking Mac or Windows for the laptop?

Not really fussed as long as it has a native IEEE 1394 port

OK, so I personally can't help you with MAC but failing being able to find a used laptop with driver required and suitable version of Windows then you could as an option get a latop that will let you install a 1394card in a port. You'll then need to install suitable windows version and legacy 1394 driver along with earlier version of C1, this being the actual faff.

There are apparently a couple of ways of using a more recent laptop and a particular hub with connecting cable that enables conversion from 1394 to usb c. There is information on PhaseOne Capture One for this. The hub that 'allegedly' works is available on Amazon at a price of about £220 plus connectors/cables at additional cost. I have a digi back and encountered connection issues but haven't pursued the solution of using a modern laptop yet, so can't provide any valuable first hand experience in doing such.....it is on the to do list.

In addition to this I've also found that the C1 drivers are sensitive to the actual Firewire chip in use. I also haven't managed to get anything to work with 64-bit software.

My setup uses an old Gateway "entertainment" laptop running the last 32-bit version of Windows 10 and the last 32-bit version of C1. It uses the legacy drivers and an external PCMCIA Firewire card as the embedded Firewire port (which uses a different chip) won't work. I've disabled Windows updates and WiFi for obvious reasons.

My Thinkpad w530 has firewire. Pretty sure they all do, but worth checking. £200 or so from Ebay.

Mine has 32GM RAM, built in colorimetry, etc. (not selling mine)

User experience posting from a phone could be better....

To add to what Gothic Image has mentioned please let me add the following. The digiback was probably supplied with both 9-9 pin and 9-6 pin 1394 cables the 9-9 permits the draw of power to/from the back. I installed a double 1394 9 pin card into my desktop and the whole thing functioned fine using W7 OS and C1 v7, I have since disposed of the desktop only a couple of months ago but retained the 1394 card but as yet made no attempt to see if could be installed/used somehow in current set up. The purpose of mentioning this is that you might already have an old PC kicking about and a 1394 port card costs about £25 which would provide the possibility of giving it a go. Let me take this opportunity to warn anybody to not try a 1394 to usb 2 converter connector, it will fry the motherboard in your  laptop....words of experience.

No, but it has what might be described as “spellscramble” on PP.

Not spellcheck, much more random.

Ah - auto obfuscation!  I've got that as well ...  :-)

I've got a MacBook Pro 17" that's not been used in ages - it had a native Firewire port. Let me know if you're interested and I can get it out and find the exact spec etc.......

hmmm... that sounds interesting. Tell me more?
