Some Advantages of Remote Photography using a Shutter App for the Model in a Home Studio - Members are invited to add to this list.

Assumption: The model has an adequate mobile phone, tripod (phone stand), and internet connection at their home or similar location.

  1. The Shutter App™ uses the model’s mobile phone camera. It is free, easy to use, and obtained from reputable sources, such as the Apple Store or Google Play for various mobile phones.
  2. Extra equipment (tripod, holder, simple lights, etc.) is relatively inexpensive and available for home use.
  3. Photographers worldwide can work with the model once she provides them with her personal Shutter App™ ID Number.
  4. The model does not have to travel to and from a separate photo session studio or location, which is time, convenience, and expense consuming.
  5. Weather (rain, wind, cold, heat, etc.) has little or no effect on the photo session.
  6. Wardrobe, props, and other photo session-related items do not require time and effort to pack, unpack, or re-pack.
  7. The model's wardrobe is not wrinkled, soiled, or damaged in transit to and from the photo session.
  8. There is more privacy for wardrobe adjustments and changes.
  9. The model’s preferred music, snacks, and refreshments are readily available.
  10. The model does not forget to bring items essential to the photoshoot.
  11. The model has more time to plan, prepare, and practice (wardrobe, hair, makeup, etc.) for the photo session.
  12. The model is more familiar with her own equipment (phone, tripod, lights, etc.) and how to use it.
  13. The equipment can be left set up or stored nearby for additional photo sessions.
  14. The model is already familiar with the set (furniture, windows, etc.) and how to use it as a model.
  15. The model is more comfortable and relaxed in her environment.
  16. The photoshoot is private, and the model can remain incognito if she wishes to. The Shutter App ID number is not associated with the model’s personal information.
  17. There is no risk of others making the model feel uncomfortable or in danger at a studio or on location.
  18. The model has more control over the photoshoot; if she feels uncomfortable, she can close the App to end the session anytime.
  19. The model is more available for short-notice, last-minute photo sessions.

Here's a YouTube video about a remote session with the Shutter App™ and Shutter Studio™:

Shutter App Remote Session

Good evening, everyone!

One problem with all remote sessions where the model is alone is that she has to frequently adjust the phone/tripod rig position/angle based on the feedback from the photographer to keep her in the frame. There are now several inexpensive tripod-mounted tracking gimbals on the market that follow the face or body of the model, so now the framing adjustments are automatic and continuous. The gimbal operates independently of the phone, so there is no impact on the Wi-Fi connection. I bought mine via Amazon for $35. Amazing device. Most of my work is remote now, so this device is part of my regular kit. Check out my Remote portfolio!

Hello from Studio One Remote International Headquarters (lol!) in Gulf Breeze, Florida! Yesterday, I tested the Auto-Tracking Phone Holder remotely with Kristy at her home and was thrilled with the results. I provide devices such as this to my models as part of their compensation. It helps with my sessions, and it promotes remote smartphone photography generally. The Auto-Tracker arrived fully charged and worked immediately right out of the box as soon as she turned it on. There was no need for Bluetooth pairing, calibration, or any other preparation. It has its own stand, or it can be mounted on a tripod or light stand in either portrait or landscape mode. This device automatically adjusts for yaw (360* left to right panning), not pitch or roll. If you want that, add a couple of hundred dollars to the price. We shot for an hour and came away with 368 tack-sharp RAW images, which off-loaded from her phone in about 20 minutes. The Auto-Tracker kept her centered the whole time. Highly recommended!

When conducting a remote session with a DSLR camera or a smartphone, having a separate method of real-time audio-visual (AV) communication with the model is almost essential. The advancements in remote meeting technology during the COVID-19 pandemic have led to the development and enhancement of various (AV) communication apps, such as Google Meet, Zoom, and FaceTime. Technically, the benefit of using AV technology is that it puts the photographer virtually on-site with the model and any assistants. Psychologically, the benefit of using AV technology tends to humanize the experience; you can see and talk to the photographer.

One issue that models have with the Shutter App system is that they cannot easily see the photos taken of themselves. When the phone's back lenses are used, which is highly recommended, the phone's display is facing away from the model. A quick fix for this issue is to cast or mirror your phone's display via Bluetooth to a monitor or TV screen positioned within the model's view in the direction of the phone. This will give the model continuous video feedback so they can adjust their pose and also see the resulting image after it is taken. Be sure to remind the model to look at the phone, not the TV, when the photo is taken.

When I had my brick-and-mortar studio, Studio One Pensacola, there were many models I wanted to collaborate with, but they lived outside of the local commuting area. Now, thanks to remote photography, especially the Shutter App, distance is no longer an issue. One such model I have known for years, Caressa, is someone I’ve wanted to work with but hadn’t had the opportunity to until now. We scheduled a one-hour session for last Thursday, and I have started uploading some of the 360 images we shot to an album, CaressaLyn, on my PurplePort profile page. Additionally, Caressa is joining PurplePort as a model, CaressaLyn, in her own right. We shot in her apartment using her Samsung S24 smartphone mounted in a single-ring light with a stand, which I am augmenting for future sessions with a tripod, auto-tracker, and a basic softbox set.
