When you say you don't care, do you really mean it?

Stuff.

Jeez!

By the way... Thank you for paying so much attention to my activities on this site. Forgive me if I'm not flattered by having a stalker.

Um.... I think I used to follow you but got too many notifications that you'd uploaded something, I like your work and find your forum contributions more worth reading than most. Beyond that I don't pay you any special attention: we haven't interacted every 8 days for 13 years :-)   When my spreadsheet crunches its numbers it's indiscriminate but your name does show up, but I don't keep tabs anyone, and had to look up your stats. As I said I'm only talking about the optics of one of the leading recipients telling saying how unimportant they are.

Last time I checked it was something like 90,000 site members, just under 9,000 have ever had an FPI, and my total puts me in about 700th place. So I'm doing better than 92% of awardees and 99.3% of all site members which is plenty good enough for me not to be unhappy. I'm fascinated by the numbers, far more than the people behind them.  I drew a parallel with money, I earn enough, I also know the woman who turned her family bookies into the one of the internets leading sites for losers (sorry but that's how I think of gamblers) has paid over 200 million in salary for each of the last few years. I have to look up the details but I don't stalk her either :-)

I used to care about getting an FPI, but I don't worry so much these days.

The system is somewhat flawed, because for an image to get seen (and therefore considered) it needs the relevant people to see it. This naturally means that popular members with lots of followers are more likely to get their work seen, and suggested. The inevitable FPI means that person probably gets a few more followers, and their likelihood increases further.

It becomes self-perpetuating, which is why you often see the same people appearing in the FPI list over and over.

As my images get very few views or likes, my chance of an FPI is vanishingly small, so I no longer worry about it.

At first I was excited to get them, now I tend to come onto PP less and pay less attention to what's going on, simply because I don't feel like uploading on here as much anymore.

That may change but my style is changing and what I want to create probably doesn't fit in with the PP aesthetics.

But... when I pulled the stats a few days ago on any visit to the first FPI page in the last year there was 21% chance of finding a picture from your portfolio there (and that excludes your tags in other ports; this isn't your best year, and your not top of the tree - there's someone with a 47% chance)"

We are not in control of the statistics on here. If Orson received many FPIs, he has been rewarded with them by other people and not himself. He can very much, not care whether he's receiving them or not. If he is actively suggesting himself for them, whilst saying he doesn't want them, well that's going to be contradictory.

The FPIs are certainly turning many people off.

I always find it interesting re them promoting the platform, that their IG account is nothing like the FPIs 😀

MaristarOxley people can opt out of social media posts, as I do. I also have my account and some albums set to members only. So non of my FPIs appear on PPs IG account. I guess that is true for many others too.

The FPIs' selections are now so predictable and frankly getting dull because of it.

I have now switched it off and I find I get more interested in the recently uploaded list, as it gives me exactly what account users are posting. I actually get more inspiration now from there.

Could you have a button on your page to say "i don't want to receive FPI's  - so all thiose people who don't care about FPI's can take positive action ??

Marista - Please may I set the record straight for once and for all... I have NEVER said that I do not care about FPIs. That's something that a certain other poster attributed to me. As I have said on this thread, I think people are wrong to regard them as an award for some form of photographic excellence. But I have also said - probably more than once - that FPIs are very useful in that they bring some extra traffic to one's profile for a little while. That's got to be good, so I do care about them.

I'm going to let the matter rest there. I realise that I may have opened the door for a lengthy essay from elsewhere, but I do not want to be the main culprit for taking over your thread.

Hey, I understand. I got caught in the wind of "I don't care" that has been used wrongly. I value your contribution on here and the FPIs you get are between yourself and the voters who awarded you the rosettes 🏵️

I think there is a disparity between what the members want to see as FPIs which seems to be original photographic work with a wider spread, unique and different but perhaps not technically spot on rather than the same old stuff which is trotted out daily and that's why a fair amount of members have the FPI widget switched off (including me) and.....

Judging by what gets put on the Suggested for FPI' list (which is open to all to add stuff to), I don't think what the members at large want to see as FPIs is 'original work with a wider spread......'. It appears what they want is more nudity. I think there is a small minority (which includes me and you) that want to see 'a wider spread, and unique and different' - and those people tend to be over represented on the group forums.  But, they are for a very specific purpose (to have a section of images to entice new members, as an 'advert'), and to that extent I think they fulfil that purpose (and as I have said previously I value getting them as it raising my profile amongst people I want to work with). It is true that for some reason it does cause some angst, most vocally amongst those people who apparently care the least about them, but if they really didn't care about them they could just be silent on the issue, and there are options for removing them from being an FPI if they really care that much about not caring.
