I found that working with better models was what improved my photography, and continues to do so....

Same here.  I've learned a lot more from good, experienced models than I have from photo mags or instructional videos.

I have given the same advice for a long time. Whatever the sphere, work with the best people you can.  Because (a) If  they know more than you, you learn. (b) The stronger the team average the better the result. (c) If the people you work with enthuse you that's a force multiplier. Mediocre people lead you to do just enough, good people make you feel only your best will do.

You can learn stuff from books and videos but learning theory as one lesson and application of it as another is usually second best compared with doing the thing with an expert.

Absolutely this.  I've lost count of the images I've seen on here and thought "that would have been really good if they'd used a better model".

Probably a "touche" moment, but do you think that models often think "I wish that photograph of me wasn't out there because that was the worst ever"?

Yes. There are cases where
(a) the photographer had the idea and the camera skills but couldn't lift the model to do the right thing for the lens
(b) the model had the looks and the skills and the photographer was insufficiently clueful
(c) Both were fine but the picture needed someone else to sort the set / the model's hair / the lighting

As part of their job models work with photographers with a range of skills, and they can tell a good picture from a bad one and be fairly sure if they had an off day or the photographer was lacking.
When a photographer comes home with pictures that aren't dreadful, but just lack something they tend to say "I'm not much good at directing models" (which if true means GET A BETTER MODEL, one who doesn't need you to be a good director). I'd say I'm 10 times better at picking models than directing them.

Does it matter?

If you enjoy your photography then no, if you like others to enjoy your photography then maybe!

Seriously don't care, I know I love what I do and that many love what I create. Never one to look for greatness, and know the gurus on here place me in tye bottom tier.

Agreed John, who really cares as its not something thats going matter outside of PP

While I agree that they are totally meaningless and unknown outside of this site, I do find they are a good indicator of which images other photographers will like. I consider them when picking which images to enter into national and international competitions, and success on here often leads to awards in these competitions, which suggests that the FPI pickers are a good proxy for judges in the competitions I enter, so it saves me money entering images which are not likely to do well.

Some people like FPIs, some aren’t bothered, and both should respect each others choice.

At one point my studio had the most FPIs of any studio on Purpleport, not sure if that's still the case though! 548 at present.

https://purpleport.com/portfolio/tridentstudio/fpis/

474 on my own profile, but I rarely upload anymore so that's unlikely to increase.

I have zero FPI's and not likely to see an FPI so I'm pretty impartial, but I love seeing others get an FPI and I submit the pics I believe are good enough. Anyone who doesn't like the FPI's that's cool, but please allow people like me to enjoy them :-)

Hi Chris, I'm not sure if the search by FPI more than 250 is actually working because I didn't see yours at all? It's very odd, possibly calmnudes can explain because you are within the areas (15000 miles of worcester uk) I specified but no sign of you. I don't think the search works as it's hit and miss. wow 548 FPI's, congrats

This profile comes up, but the studio one doesn't. Probably needs to be FPIs on the account, not just tagged ones.

FPIs are fine and pleasant to get.I don't post images with any intent to "try" for FPIs or for any other reason than I thought they were worth editing to an end point.

I see no point in making images that are of no interest to me and so, no matter how good any particular model may be, some may not be suitable for what I want to do.

I am always amazed when I do get an FPI.

From what I can see the studio is credited in tons but there are a lot less than 548 pictures on the studios port and not a lot of those are fpis. But for your own profile there it’s about 3/4 on your own port and 1/4 tagged by others

tandi have you thought about becoming a FPI selector - I believe they are always looking for new ‘elves’

Many thanks for the suggestion but art is very subjective, unfortunately for me that means I would be too biased towards things I like and not impartial enough to give certain artworks the chance they deserve.
