First off, I’m not picking on anyone. I’m not here to incite a riot or start a comment war. But I do have a genuine question.

How many of you that have also raised an objection about FPIs and the FPI system enter regular photography competitions outside of Purpleport?

I’m just curious if that thrill of attention and recognition is something you actively chase, or if it’s only on your radar because it’s given freely by the site, meaning it loses value and makes having a pop fair game?

not sure if I fall in to the scope of the OP, but I'm completely ambivalent  about FPIs. If they stopped tomorrow, all I'd miss is the bickering that sometimes keeps the forums active.
But .. I don't enter photographic competitions either inside or outside of PP, nor do I court review (portfolio) or opinion (single image critique) from others.

What makes me chuckle is when someone who disagrees with the FPI system or trots out one of the tired old conspiracy theories has an FPI themselves. Do they uphold their principles by deleting the pic so that it's removed from the front page? Erm...  :)

I don’t have any issues with FPI’s as I switched of the FPI section some time ago and never look at them.

Much happier looking at the recently uploaded images.

They'd only have to put it in their private album momentarily, to remove the FPI status.

(I've not raised objections about FPIs, so no comment on that, but isn't the equivalent of competitions elsewhere the competitions here?  )

Didn't realise that.

FPI'S are a nice bit of recognition for those that get one getting loves on an image is a nice thing but a comment is so much better as long as it is fitting to the image, I have recently asked for an image review and very pleased with what i received in the way of critique so my answer is yes it is nice to get a little attention even if very short lived...is that not what we all secretly want why else would we put images on here ?

I suffer enough anxiety just putting an image up so I don't believe i actively chase fame and recognition(if only if only) purpleport is realisically the only place i enter competions :)

Meh.

FPIs are nice for a few hours because a hundred or so extra people look at your photo.

That's all.

Models don't pester you for naked TF shoots because of a few FPIs.
At least, they don't pester me :(

People who bitch about FPIs have never had to sit and listen to a camera club judge   ;)

I think we’d all be lying if we didn’t like the attention we get via our photography. Whether it’s from an FPI or via social media or even family and friends. Come on, it’s why many of us do it. Not all of course. But we’ve found a creative outlet we’re kinda good at and yes recognition is required to keep many of us going.

As for external competitions, I enter a few now and then, get no where, try and improve and then try again. Still never got anywhere but there’s no harm in trying.

I was a member of a local camera club and entered the competitions winning on one occasion. I left for no other reason I kept missing meetings due to work commitments. I’ve also had a couple of shots published that I provided a model with. FPIs are a “nice to have” but I do shoots first & foremost to please the model and myself and put them on PP to see how they are gauged but many a shot I really like are not perceived by others as such while others do well. The circle of life.

I'm fairly ambivalent about the FPI system in that I can see the plus sides of it and also the downsides of it and whereas I do enjoy it when I get an FPI, it doesn't make a huge amount of difference how I feel and how I feel about my work and I don't do anything differently in order to get FPI's.

I also don't enter competitions outside of PP and I doubt I would even if my photography was of a standard / level where I could enter them. I only shoot in jpeg and I know that means that the quality automatically rules me out but beside that, I just don't really feel the need for recognition or anything, I just do my photography for my own personal goals and achievements without outside recognition. I am by far my own worst critic so my own satisfaction with a shot is more important than anything else to me.

That probably doesn't help at all and I went completely off subject 😬

I don't enter any competitions.  As to objecting to FPIs, I don't think I've done that, but I have given a view that, as Huw suggests, their value is limited to the few extra views on here, and the bit of a grin I have if and when pops up.  I've been accused of being able to take that view as I have a good few.  Well yes, I am able to take that view 'cos I have experienced it.  The only reason I express the view is to try  to save some the disappointment when they get one and roughly the sfofa happens as a consequence.  I'm not part of the 'let me think of a reason to put FPIs down' community.  The FPI 'spats' are, thankfully, far less vitriolic than they were a few years ago, so I'm guessing many old combatants have realised there's nothing to be gained by jumping the 'same shit, different day' carousel again and again.
