FFS - Car Written Off

By Wise Old Dragon, 1733750137

So my daughter asked to get some CDs out of the garage on Saturday but the car was in the way.

Went to move it forward slightly, now not sure if it was due to wet shoes or sheer stupidty but my foot slipped and hit the gas.

Car went forward straight through a metal fence on the otherside of the road.

The underwriters have written the car off.

So no car at the moment.

Really pissed off at my stupidity.

No one else involved and no one hurt.

Sorry about the car but glad you survived.

It's far easier forgiving others mistakes than one's own

One of the family has managed to do it twice....    both times a write off.

Easier than one thinks.

Nobody hurt is what counts  :)

... on the other hand, another of the family has rolled a Rangerover and a Discovery - both times on black ice going to work at 05.00.
Much more spectacular. Fortunately only very minor cuts one time.

Oops, at least nobody was injured. Looking for a positive in all of this......Did you find the CDs?  ;)

Ouch, you haven't found a way to blame your daughter on the mishap I guess Wink  ? Mine forgot to put the handbrake on in a hill, only a massive boulder got hit, garage wanted 700 but got a bumper off ebay for 50 and did it myself, some hidden bent steelwork doesn't affect safety so that will stay until car gets scrapped...

How badly damaged is it? A lot of modern cars get written off because spares are so expensive, it doesn't take long for a repair bill to exceed the value of the car.

Could a mechanic fix it with parts from a scrappy / ebay? (Note, there are some parts of the car I wouldn't recommend this approach)

It was actually Christmas DVDs and nope didn't find them, typo on my part.

To busy trying to remove car from the grass in the play park, it got stuck in the mud that 5 mins before was grass. :)

Lucky that the play park was empty......

Cars are just "things"......and you have a handy "teasing mechanism forever now".

I broke my thumb climbing past the car in the garage to get a book for t'other half years ago....book wasn't even in the garage!

:-)

My mum managed to do it in reverse - car facing forwards on her drive - shot back, across the road and into the neighbours car on their drive. I heard of someone of similar age (early 80s) who killed someone in a similar accident. I thought "doddery old..."  Then I did it moving mine to open the garage door. I was supposed to be doing a shoot that afternoon as well, paid the model but the studio waived their fee.

I think it's only possible with an automatic, your brain says "I'm pushing the brake and not stopping so I need to push harder" and you hit something before you realise you've got the wrong pedal. With an manual you'd push the clutch down as well. I wonder if the emergency braking fitted to new cars would help. Would love to setup cardboard boxes to form a "wall" with nothing behind them and give it a try.

Wife's brother did that at 14.

Started on the car in the driveway, (automatic) put it in reverse, pushed the accelerator.
Shot back across the road into a neighbour's gate.

Didn't know which pedal was the brake pedal....

Ouch. I think one of reasons so many cars (is it a now a requirement) need you to press the brake to start the engine isn't so much that brake needs to be applied, as it gets the drivers feet aligned, same with taking it out of park / neutral.

I think the answer is “don’t keep your car in the garage”.  Just give out over completely to stuff halfway to the Tip…..like the rest of us. 😉

you came out ok and that's all that counts  plus an interesting story to tell .
