leaving your keys in your vehicle

To answer the original question, if car is stolen because of your negligence the insurance company won't pay a claim arising from that. That logic probably extends to the scenario above, but the only way to be sure is to ask your insurers. If it's bothering you the cheapest steering wheel lock in Halfords is £11
In many cars you can change a fuse so that the radio , lighter and other things do not the ignition to be turned on.

The common practice of starting the vehicle to deice [for example] and then leaving it running unattended is an offence and you can get prosecuted for it.
I think there are some ifs and buts around that. Someone seems to have created an urban myth that section 42 of the road traffic act says something about it (it doesn't it says breaking some rules elsewhere in the RTA is an offence)
https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1986/1078/regulation/107/made?view=plain says you must turn the engine off and apply the brake when parking on the road, but your driveway wouldn't qualify.

Section 42 of the RTA covers unattended idling on public highway.... its not an urban myth.
If you leave your car idling unattended on your driveway, your insurance company will not pay out.
If you have taken steps to prevent the car being removed or otherwise immobilised, then that will be between you and your insurer.
But ... there are no ifs and buts around Section 42 ... it is an offence, and to suggest that there is a grey area [ifs and buts] is wholly misleading and incorrect.

Can't you go to the pub, plug and charge your device whilst enjoying a lovely meal and a drink

Stu H https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1988/52/section/42. Does not say that. From that link you can find the whole if the rta please post where it mentions leaving an engine running, :-)
it’s covered elsewhere but that only covers parking on roads not on one’s drive

My 2019 Volvo can be started with my phone while I am in bed, so the ice is gone and it’s nice and warm when I go to it. Stays locked of course.
Volvo probably know the law…

Huw 2.b.ii surely covers it?
Looks OK, thanks.
Pretty standard in Sweden!
... and you can't drive it if you started it with the phone.

Accidentally left my car parked off my drive on road yesterday as was expecting a delivery. Neighbour knocked at 10pm to tell me both my back windows were down and my back seat was full of parcels. My dog must of pressed the windows down when he was in the back. Luckily I'm in a nice quiet area so everything was still there, anyway put windows up moved car onto drive got out only to turn around and car was back on road...forgot to put my handbrake on 🤣 anyway managed to get into rolling car and rectify it thankfully 😀
