leaving your keys in your vehicle

we've got a power cut so im thinking of charging up my portable power pack / phone via my vehicle usb but will need to leave the keys in the ignition. just on the off chance if someone tries to steal the vehicle but I notice in time and cling on to the bonnet whilst they're driving away, will my insurance or the criminal compensation scheme (if there is one?) pay for a new windscreen if i smash it during any theft attempt in order to prevent the vehicle being fully stolen away?

Perhaps you would be more comfortable sitting in the vehicle?

Do you have a second set of keys?

Will the vehicle lock with one key in the ignition? I expect so.

Just take two wheels of and let the car rest on beer crates. No one will take it for a ride.

It would not be hard to wire a typical cigarette lighter charger directly to the battery so that it is not affected by the ignition switch. However, you connect it, consider whether you will drain the battery so that the car won't start.

I have a jump start pack. It was USB outputs and can be used as a massive power bank.

I am only guessing but I would expect the insurance to be very reluctant to pay if you leave the keys in while it is unattended. It might even be an offence to leave the keys in an unattended vehicle.

ah, thanks, I do have a spare key and didn't think of that. Good answer! I like the beer crate idea but it's alot of hassle for this time of night.

Many cars with keyless entry will not let you lock the vehicle if there's a key inside.

bad john yes, I thought that might be true so the insurance would probably not cover those scenarios

Which GTA you playing? haha

I very much doubt you'd be able to cling to the bonnet, not in this weather/storm for long

Why not, go for a drive somewhere, plug phone & power bank in, drive half hour away or so, then drive back...

Why not, drive to your local supermarket, take your charging kit with you, find a socket, plug it in there, do a bit shopping, for say an hour, bingo...charged.

Or, do what I do, take my charger to work, find a hidden spot, plug in there?

Or local 24 hour garage ask then nicely

I have a bunch of V-mount batteries, and a 2.7 kWh inverter battery.

Doesn't everybody have that?

I'd had my car for about three years before I found out about that. (And even then, it took someone else to explain why I couldn't lock the damn thing...)

It is unlikely that any insurance will pay out as you have not protected your vehicle from theft.

Many insurers will only pay out if there are signs of a forced entry ...

The common practice of starting the vehicle to deice [for example] and then leaving it running unattended is an offence and you can get prosecuted for it.
