Upgrade current PC or build/buy new???

Or stick to the one I've got? The issue is my processor is not AVX2 supported and therefore I cannot update Photoshop to the latest version.

My current motherboard is only compatible with generation 2 or 3 Intel processors. You need to have at least a gen 12 processor for AVX2.

I would therefore have to replace the motherboard, processor, DDR & probably the PSU, so basically everything but the hard drives, case and GPU.

What do you guys think? I use Photoshop a lot and don't really want to lose out on the generative fill improvements and any future AI related updates that will inevitably come down the line.

If you're that far behind on the processor/motherboard I'd buy a new machine from someone like PC Specialist if you can afford it. You can save a bit going down the DIY route, but I don't think it's worth it with the hassle factor and lack of warranty.

Got my last system with Scan. Had it for 4 years now. Got a 3 year warranty 1 on site and 2 distance. Some memory failed and they replaced them by post. Good price and quality product.

Novatech will sell you a tested "bare bones" kit ready to go into your existing case if that suits?

I might have found a solution. My son's old PC case has a msi b450m pro vdh max motherboard which will take AMD Ryzen generation 3 processors that do support AVX2. So I could get a AMD Ryzen 7 5700G cpu from Amazon for £148 and start from there. It also has DDR4 which supports upto 128GB.

I would try to struggle on without spending too much right now.

Big changes with AI and other stuff coming over the next year, easy to spend too much.

i keep looking at cpu upgrades for my setup.

GPU, not cpu.

Hi Stuart, AVX2 was introduced in 2013 - you only need a 4th gen Core series processor or later  (My i7-3770 is just one year too old).  You may find a slightly later CPU will drop in to your existing board (but do check board/cpu compatibility)

See this handy filterable table of AVX2-compatible CPUs

https://www.epey.co.uk/cpu/e/YToxOntpOjUwOTc7YToxOntpOjA7czo2OiI0Mjc2NzEiO319X2I6MDs=/

Or this from Intel

I ended up buying a Machine from AC in Liverpool

The link is wrong - it's actually an AMD Ryzen 7 5800  (which is a bit quicker than the i7 equivalent ) £800

The problem is my motherboard is a gigabyte ga-z77-d3h which only supports 2nd & 3rd generation Intel Core CPU's. I also have the i7 3770K.

Newer board and memory then at least :)   I  decided the whole thing was pretty long in the tooth and could do with more/faster RAM, a modern GPU and faster SSd etc.  Also had end of support for Win 10 to think about

Yeah I might end up combining the two machines. My only worry then will be restoring the file paths to my LR catalogues.

I moved a catalogue/images from a MacBook to a Windows laptop and as it turns out - this is easy:-

Once you have the catalogue and image files where you need them, open the catalogue in Lightroom as usual.  If the image paths have changed, there will be warning triangles all over the place.  In the Folders panel in the library module, locate the parent folder where all your images used to live (remember this folder structure is in Lightroom's head - it's not real).  Right-click the top-level folder under which all your images live, and choose "Update Folder Location..." from the pop-up menu.   Navigate to the new actual location of this folder in the dialogue box and click OK.  That's it...

Not worth messing about - get a new one built with the latest tech and components. Maybe configure your own from PC Specialist https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/gaming-professional-enthusiast-pcs/

or one of the other custom PC builders. Simple enough to transfer your images and catalogues and re-install your software.

Last time I looked it I decided it was too much hassle to change the Mainboard (and possibly PSU) but keep an old graphics card and pretty slow disk, so I changed the whole thing.
